Discussion: Trump Announces Jeff Sessions Stepping Down As Attorney General

Former DOJ spokesperson says to anyone who wants to protect the Mueller investigation, Whittaker (The current Chief of Staff who will step into the job for now) is the worse possible choice. He is on the record criticizing the investigation.

They’ll never get the chance. The ‘acting’ guy will be there until the new year, when they can slam dunk anyone they want.

Yeah…I just heard that…note my post above.

Did anyone win the pot on when this would be announced following the Midterms?

But can the House make criminal findings and indict people? Without the DOJ available to deliver criminal indictments there’s no fear of their efforts harming Trump associates. The Executive and DOJ can probably just ignore House findings if Trump absolutely insists on it and decrees it.

YASSSS. The starting gun has just been fired.

Expected, but since Dems won the House they can probably guard Mueller. It should be their top priority

That majority is not sworn in for two months.

I think the new House majority will spend most of its time trying to find out what Mueller was able to find out before his investigation was shuttered by the incoming A.G. because Trump, with the Senate in tow, is going to quash it. Right now.

How about that @erik_t ? Did I win the out-doom & gloom?

I don’t think they can really do anything to defend him since they don’t take over until 2019…BUT they can definitely restart the hearings and investigations in January.

First question to acting AG Whitaker. Did Trump or anyone working with Trump talk to you about the Mueller investigation?

“The Wednesday Afternoon Massacre.”

Ari Melber is saying we are right up against a constitutional crisis.

The point of emphasis really ought to be that all of this could have happened already. Sessions could have been fired last week, or last month, and we did not then have had the ironclad knowledge of an incoming gavel.

Democracy and the rule of law remain under siege, but we are in a dramatically better position today. We forget, after so many years of pitiful withering of the oversight powers of Congress, what a motivated and civically-minded House can do.

donnie didn’t make this move prior to the midterms because they wanted this investigation to fade into the back.

Are you intentionally missing the point?

It won’t, and can’t, because a Democratic House will not let it.

To review: He has to be fired for cause. The idea that Bobby Three Sticks is going to roll over and just pack up is silly.

Umm…no just saying why I don’t think they did this earlier.

Absolutely.

We’ve all watched Trump, for decades. He’s crazy. Yet we console ourselves that somehow, some way, he may tip-toe right up to the line of utter batshit insanity but pull back from the brink, betting either he or someone holding his leash regains their sanity in the nick of time.
But why do we believe that? Why isn’t it entirely plausible he just leaps off the ledge, fires Mueller, fires Kelly, fires Wray, whatever? Because we can’t envision such madness? Because we believe in some sort of base level of competence in our government? Who’s to say we don’t have it all wrong?
I’m not at all sanguine Mueller is safe. And if he is it doesn’t mean a dozen other absolutely insane actions aren’t ready for release. Trump is nuts, and believing even he has too much sense to spin absolutely out of control is folly.
