The Vatican isn’t completely walled or fenced off. When the Lateran Treaty of 1929 that gave the state its form was being prepared, the boundaries of the proposed territory were influenced by the fact that much of it was all but enclosed by this loop. For some tracts of the frontier, there was no wall, but the line of certain buildings supplied part of the boundary, and for a small part of the frontier a modern wall was constructed.
It is exactly the same! A Medieval wall built as a fortress to protect those inside from the reality of the outside world. A perfect analogy for the Trumpian idea of the USA today.
The media should ask all the Republican candidates about this, not just Trump. Because, as President Obama pointed out, they all share similar opinions on the wall.
Vatican security has to takes measures that keep in mind an average U.S. citizen may visit. Sort of like the routine you follow when a friend is bringing over their incontinent Beagle with ADD. Move everything of value to a safe room or put it behind a fence
This is getting interesting. Last time I was at St. Peter’s I didn’t need to show my passport or ID to cross from the city of Rome to the Vatican City. So there maybe walls but one can easily get into St. Peter’s Square. The hardest part about visiting the Vatican is finding a restroom. Could this be the reason why our neighbors to the south are crossing? We don’t charge to use the restrooms.
Interesting that Francis singled out Donald when all the Republican candidates are in favor of a wall. Oh wait - two of those candidates are Catholic. Francis wouldn’t want to tarnish Cruz or Rubio as non-Christians.
@bamclaugh: Great point. They are the exact same type of physical object. The pope is infallible only on matters catholic theology.
The pope’s wading into American politics gives the impression that he is backing the Rubio, John Bush and Teddy Cruz, who are christian fundamentalists with Latin American roots in His comments.
Use your google scroll buttons and “walk” along the fence (that is short enough to hop over easily) and discover that the gates are wide open and a guy with a helpful “heart” vest will answer your questions as you freely walk through. It’s fenced off FROM CARS not from walking people. As one would hope. for safety. Pope 1, Trump -1million voters.
And he fails to mention that on any given day thousands of people travel from one nation (Italy) to another (the Vatican City State) without passing through any kind of customs or immigration checkpoint. You don’t even need ID to wander around the Vatican’s largest and most important building.
