If I didn’t have an abiding love for Fred Rogers, I’d suggest “Donald in the Land of Make Believe”. You know, he’s watching Fox News, hears “$400 million cash”, sees a picture of a plane, and then the scene goes all ripply and we emerge to his quotes about what he saw, so clearly, all that cash! the bags! the excellent camera work! the utter lack of papparazi!
Repeat from next event, where the edges soften just a bit “… I guess…”, then all ripply again and we’re back to the real world with Trump tweet, surprised trailing “!” and all.

Five minutes later. “Mr. President, the plane is down. We have just determined that the Russian Ambassador to the United States was on it. Coming to meet with you as planned.” President Self-Love: “Please apologize. Mistake anyone could have made.” “Mr. President, the Russians are arming their missiles.”

This is most likely not just about Trump himself. His entire team may be careless, has no access to him, is frightened of him, perhaps all of the above. Most likely, either innocently or on purpose, someone gave him incorrect information about the hostage flight landing in Geneva. The misinterpretation fed his narrative, so he used it.

He didn’t ask for evidence beforehand? No one corrected him until now, two days later? He didn’t watch or read the news after Florida? No one came to him before he repeated the falsehood again in Maine? Mike Pence didn’t call him? He refused to accept a clarification from other senior staff?

There is no good answer. We should all be very frightened.

Although Trump tweeted this “correction” this morning, I still bet anyone $10 that before Monday, Trump will revert and claim that he saw a video of the $400 million payment the United States made to Iran as it arrived in Iran for a 3rd time. If not Trump, at least one of his surrogates.
