Just pass the legislation and override the veto!
Meeting on January 9,2018 - from The Atlantic…
"Trump took nearly every conceivable position in the debate: He backed a “clean” bill to extend DACA, protect the so-called “Dreamers,” and bolster border security, absent the more controversial immigration measures conservatives want; then, he said he’d “take the heat” for a more comprehensive immigration overhaul along the lines of what Trump had denounced as a candidate in 2016; later, he demanded that Congress fund the southern border wall as part of the initial DACA deal, reinserting the wrench that has held up the immigration talks for weeks.
Finally, Trump said he’d sign whatever immigration bill Congress could send him. “I’m not saying I want this or I want that. I will sign it,” he told the group."
Just a reminder of what the lying prick said.
Bi-partisan bill that protects Dreamers, has money for his fucking wall, and limits legal immigration more than we should - and he throws out every lame and false excuse to kill it and says “No.”
Fucking lying uncaring despicable prick.
Trump controls the base.
It’d be nice to live in a world where the Democratic minority could override a veto when in fact the R base is rolling over and playing dead because donald wants no one but white people in the country and has the immigration hardliners to back him up.
Traitor trump of course will refuse to do what is right for America.
Why not name names instead of saying DHS? Who else (besides Trump) owns this? Who, among Dems, voted for Kirstjen Nielsen?
And once again the small racist minority holds the rest of us hostage over any attempt at a humane response to the situation of the DACA recipients. We need to all hang our heads in shame.
Fucking cowards, one and all - and I am including a lot of Democrats in that condemnation. This is untenable and it is obviously going to get much, much worse - no end in sight.
Hey, but the stock market is up - am I right?
“ignores the lessons of 9/11 and significantly increases the risk of crime and terrorism”
You wanna know what the lesson of 9/11 was?
READ YOUR FUCKING DAILY INTEL BRIEF, MR. PRESIDENT!
provides a 12-year path to citizenship for young immigrants known as Dreamers, allocates the full $25 billion President Trump has demanded for the U.S.-Mexico border, bans the parents of DACA recipients from ever receiving citizenship, and bars legal permanent residents from sponsoring their adult, unmarried children.
What, didn’t the Republicans also require ICE agents to remove the toys from any Dreamer’s home and make them wear a special shirt for the rest of their lives?
This is BS, it’s a total Capitulation by the Democrats.
Trump wants the daca kids deported but somehow thinks he wont get blamed when it happens
Look, it’s a problem of basic arithmetic. To override a presidential veto, you need a two thirds vote in both houses of Congress.
At least until November, the ®s control both houses. And over at the White House, it’s clear that “General Jackboot” Kelly and the other anti-immigrant hardliners are driving.
So, pass the legislation, fail to override the veto, and then what … very sincerely say “I’m sorry” as thousands upon thousands of young people who know no other home than here get loaded on busses?
That may end up being the only alternative. But if you’re going to look in the eye of people whose lives are being shattered, and say “we tried”, you really do have to try everything you can first, including some really unpleasant compromises.
“would effectively make the United States a Sanctuary Nation where ignoring the rule of law is encouraged.”
Oh, horseshit. How can a law undermine the rule of law? It might change the way things currently work, but since this, too, would be a law, the only thing it undermines is right-wing fever swamp. I suppose DOTUS’s base isn’t very good at words, though, so they’ll buy this argument.
And 10-12 years for dreamers to get citizenship? That is absurd.
I do know of some folks who are trying to build a nation where ignoring the rule of law is encouraged. But only if you’re rich. Laws (and cabin class seats on airplanes) are for the poor folks.
All the Democrats hollering about DACA, “resolved” through an agreement to have the issue “considered,” was a knowing and willful political cover for their going along with its demise and the deportation of millions. It was and remains obvious that the bulk of the Republicans, especially the House, and the Trump Administration weren’t interested and there was zero chance of DACA being saved. The fact that the Democrats weren’t willing to play hard ball says it all. So let’s say it: Anyone who voted Democrat in effect voted for one of the two parties of mass deportations. Time to look in the mirror.
Let him veto it. Let his first veto be the “lovely” DACA bill he himself proposed.
Time to expose the Emperor.
Not a shirt, but maybe an identifying patch on their clothing – some easy-to-spot color like yellow, in a specific shape like maybe a star or something.
If ever a bluff needs to be called, it’s this one.
The left-leaning portion of the Democratic Party needs to see the writing on the wall here: these people need protection. You are in the minority. You NEED a bipartisan bill - this isn’t sentiment, it’s math.
If you’re focusing on sticking it to the Trump Administration, you’re focusing on the wrong thing. If you’re focusing on protecting Dreamers, passing a bipartisan compromise has always been the only possible way forward. Ideological victories are far less important than people’s lives.
This is not the “last best chance to save DACA”. How foolish. This is an exercise to make clear who is for this overwhelmingly hispanic group of young adults. And who is not. The “last best chance” is the 2018 midterms. And since I grew up in Chicago, where we take politics seriously enough to speak directly about it: if every hispanic citizen votes in November, the Democrats will take the House and, at the very least, pick up seats in the Senate. But hispanics have the worst voting turn out records of any ethnic or demographic group. Moreover, as I have watched the debate over the last several weeks, most representatives of the hispanic communities have blamed the Democrats, who have been struggling in their Congressional minority status to help the Dreamers, rather than the Republicans, who glory in their ability to Drown The Dream. So, long as the hispanic - and left wing Democratic - community blame the Democrats, they will depress the very voting turn out that is, in fact, the last chance.
