Shameful!
Completely unacceptable. NOW.
This book is tangentially related to what happens when small children are forcibly separated from their families. Just finished reading is this morning, it’s good and well researched.

Now for the subject at hand. This is shameful. This is outrageous. This is something that will not go away in two years, we will being dealing with the harm our government imposed on these children and family for decades.
“It’s inconvenient for us to obey the law or to repair the results of our violation” swayed very few judges ever.
How about incarcerations for criminal contempt for the top of the chain of command, at a rate of one day per child-day lost?
NYT published this almost a year ago about emotional damage to children separated from their parents. No one in the admin knows or cares what they’ve done to the children. Bottom line, they’re going to be damaged adults. The longer they’re held, the longer it will take to regain emotional stability

Some youngsters retreat entirely, their eyes empty, bodies limp, their isolation a wall of defiance. Others cannot sit still: watchful, hyperactive, ever uncertain.
Some compulsively jump into the laps of strangers, or grab their legs and hold on for life. And some children, somehow, move past a sudden separation from their parents, tapping a well of resilience.
@lastroth The excerpt at Amazon is long enough to get a good sense of how it reads, thanks for that, I’ve put it on hold at the library.
Of all the harm Trump and him minions have done, this to me is by far the worst. We’re talking 10’s of thousands of children and families - suffering that was deliberate, calculated and entirely avoidable.
I had been taking some solace in the fact that Trump has proved so incompetent that he really wasn’t doing a lot of harm (although those exploiting him were getting their judges, etc) but this episode is just heinous. People deserve to go to jail for the wanton cruelty and harm they’ve caused, although they probably won’t. Perhaps we can agree on a lifetime of shaming and shunning once we get some order back in the universe?
And they’ll probably “hate us for our freedums”, as well…
You should also read The Color of Lightning. It is similar and takes place in the same parts of Texas as well as Oklahoma and New Mexico. Some of the people show up in it.
It’s just as good as News of the World, though I guess I should warn you that it’s pretty violent. It’s more violent than News of the World but if you want to read more about women and children captured, you should read The Color of Lightning too.
As for this story - two years is absurd. What the fuck have they done?
Can we just issue an Amber Alert every time the government snatches another child?
If the potentially damaged adults commit acts of crimes in this country it will only be more fodder for the pig in WH to say immigrants bring crime to this country, just fueling the vicious cycle of hatred he’s created.
It confounds me how so many Americans go to church on Sunday and blithely ignore the issue on Monday. Though some people have spoken out (almost all Progressives), on a policy of such profound immorality, you’d hope almost everyone across all political ideologies would make their voices heard.
Would like two minutes to separate Trump from our country.
Outside of war, this is the most evil shit this country has done since Jim Crow. Somebody’s going to straight to hell over this. Or, if you believe in reincarnation, somebody’s coming back as a poor white female Republican with a thyroid issue.
I’m all excited about reading more of her books. I checked this morning and my library system doesn’t have any of her other books as e-books, so now I’ll check on physical copies.
What this administration has done is create more DACA recipients. And come someone explain to me if these children were with their parent, legal guardian, or other siblings that were asking for asylum how in the hell can they be advocated for their cases if no one can find them?
I’m trying to think if the United States has ever had an official policy quite this sadistic and can’t think of any.
Yeah it’s hard for me to believe we’re doing this but we are. And it’s worse than I want to think it is, too. Goddamn them.
Big Media is partly responsible for this esp. TV but also print and digital. They can’t manage more than one issue at a time, currently it’s the Mueller report and everything related to it, but a while back children being separated from their parents was their only focus.
This is just unspeakably evil.
Of course they were completely capable of tracking girls’ menstrual cycles.
I just couldn’t wait to share it. One of the things that stood out for me is that the main character is the 19th century version of TMP. He shares the news of the world from different newspapers.
And what hit me first is that the main character seems to have lived 3 lifetimes of experience before we set off on this journey with him.
@tena I’m sure you didn’t have to refer to Google maps as much as I did. And I kept having to tell myself that Wichita Falls is not in Kansas.
