Discussion: Trump Admin. Quietly Rolls Back Civil Rights Efforts Across Federal Gov't

What GWB did, only paradoxically more widespread yet less competent.

Trump is a total a$$hole. Oxford English Dictionary is making a special accommodation for him.

“At best, this administration believes that civil rights enforcement is superfluous and can be easily cut. At worst, it really is part of a systematic agenda to roll back civil rights,” said Vanita Gupta, the former acting head of the DOJ’s civil rights division under President Barack Obama.

Yeah, I’d say it’s that second thing there.
“You good ol’ boys just go on back to what you were doin’. Just try not to be so obvious about it, ya hear?”

Despite the incompetence of the Trump administration in accomplishing its legislative agenda in more visible ways, they are quietly destroying so much that creates fairness in our society. Even if Democrats succeed in 2018, how long will it take to undo the Trump damage?

More excellent work by ProPublica.

It takes a special kind of monster to complain that making police departments kill fewer of its citizens, and to treat its citizens without regard to race, etc., is just a way for governments to grab more tax money.

Which is why our side totally f*cked ourselves by focusing on individuals and their “flaws” instead of what really matters - the appointment power of the presidency and the balance of power between the two parties in Congress.

All the people who didn’t vote for Hillary because they didn’t “like” her were ignoring the fact that the party that controls the White House controls thousands of crucial appointments throughout the executive and judicial branches.

The damage will take decades to undo.

Sessions has long been a public critic of consent decrees. As a senator, he wrote they “constitute an end run around the democratic process.”

Every time some dope tries to puff up his man credentials with football talk like that you need to remind him that the “end run” is a legal play.

A glimmer of good news…

Not for long MoFo’s. Just giving us more work to do when they go down.

Maybe there were too many investigations, maybe they cost a lot, maybe the system needed adjustment… But, just as with the ACA, instead of fixing the minor problems in otherwise strong policies, these trumpers just use them as an excuse to enact their real agenda: letting polluters, racists, and wrong-headed groups of all kinds run amok.

It is happening in ways even people who pay attention don’t even know. For example, I’m a trial lawyer who represents people who have been injured seriously by medical malpractice or defective medical devices or the families of people killed under these circumstances. There is a bill that is being debated today, HR 1215, which will dramatically affect the ability of my clients to obtain any justice. I have been a little hesitant to bring this up, because it is too much in the weeds, and it affects me personally since that is how I make my living. But the bill will actually accomplish two goals: 1. Reduce the pool of money available to democractic candidates (Trial lawyers give a lot); and 2. reward large liability insurers and other significant Replican doners. But the devastating affect of all this is when someone is injured because of negligence, or even intentional conduct, they will no longer have any remedy.

And the Civil Rights bill that is being proposed is much, much worse. The overriding policy of civil rights enforecement through litigation has been to deter violations by holding those responsible accountable for these violations. Currently if the police beat you up or kill you, you or your family can bring a claim and recover for the loss of life and the damage to your body, the humiliation and suffering that comes from it, and the violator has to pay your attorney. Under this legislation, you would have to pay your own attorney, and you would only be able to recover for economic losses. So if you are unemployed and you get beat up and are in the hospital for two days, a successful claim would pay your medical bills. That’s it. They know that bringing such a case would cost more than the potential recovery, so the cases don’t get brought and no one is held accountable. In other words, civil rights are no longer enforceable. This is only the beginning if we let the Republican stay in power.

Applying this logic consistently, the administration also proposes doing away with the Electoral College before 2020 and adjusting Senate seats to reflect the underlying population counts!

Thanks for sharing that so eloquently. It doesn’t make me feel better, but it makes me willing to fight harder against this administration and what it is doing to principles of fairness.

Thank you. And it’s not just this administration, it is Republicans. All of them. Being a Republican elected official, in my view, is prima facie evidence of your corruption, and often much more.

Or they can go back to allowing folks to wield a axe handle in front of their establishments akin to Lester Maddox. They’ll expand it for cake bakers closely held companies.

Pay no attention to the Orange Fraud- look behind the curtain!

Go to the Post Office and buy a stack of plain, pre-paid postcards at 38 cents each. Make a list of your House Rep’s and Senators’ addresses. The US Congress may not log all e-mails or phone calls (they probably keep a running talley) and phones are usually answered by volunteers or interns. A sealed letter can be held up while it is checked for anthrax or whatever but postcards sail right thru and they’ll have a handwritten hard copy of your opinions. At 38 cents you can send a lot of opinions they have to deal with.

Run for office- if Trump and Louie Gohmert can get elected what’s to stop a qualified candidate?

Become a Precinct Committee Officer, sometimes it’s a Ward officer. You’ll meet with neighborhood Dems and get out the vote. Find good citizens willing to run for office.

Register people to vote. If you need to help people overcome the GOP-led Voter run-around help them do that.

Run for School Board. Make sure Civics is being properly taught. Think a majority of America knows how government works? Just 26% of eligible voters in America voted for Trump and half of eligible voters stayed home last November. Today’s 12-year olds will be voting for President in 8 years.

Run for Mayor, City Council, County Commissioner, Borough Assembly.

Get appointed to your Planning Commission. Know everything going on in your community.

Run for State Legislature or Congress. The next census is in 2020, then we’ll redraw Congressional Districts. Get rid of GERRYMANDERING! Safe GOP seats gave us such intellectual giants as Louie Gohmert and Steve King. In most cases it’s the state Legislature that draws Congressional boundaries. Make it FAIR, OPEN and HONEST!

Overturn Citizens United. Money is NOT speech and Corporations are NOT people- at least not until Texas executes one.
Overturn any voter ID laws the are clearly an attempt to disenfranchise.

Surprise, surprise. When Trump and Sessions have acted like racist in the past, guess what? They are racists. Why anyone expect any different from them?

But Jill Stein stopped a nuclear war by campaigning against Hillary.
