Discussion for article #241149
I thought he was great.
There were a couple of cringe worthy jokes, but thatâs any comedian. He did a really good job last night. I canât wait to see how he handles a heavy hitting guest like Christie on Wednesday.
Iâm guessing a lot of folks turned down the job because John would be a tough act to follow. Especially because I really think a lot of the show was John. Iâm sure he had lots of help writing stuff, but he was almost the same when he appeared unscripted on other shows and formats so I really believe a lot of the daily show was John.
with emphasis on the âheavyâ
I can see why they chose him. He was sharp, funny, and totally relaxed. I laughed out loud a couple of times. Congratulations!
It has been reported that Jessica Williams was offered the seat, but declined.
The show will change over time, as it changed over time even with Jon at the helm. Some critic complained that Trevor didnât do as good a job as Stewart with all the dick jokes, and all I could think was âwhat show were they watchingâŚJon Stewart did his share of dick jokes while helming the show.â
Agreed. I expected Noah to perform well, still he exceeded my expectations. He was funny, humble, and obviously a little nervous. Who wouldnât be? Stewart is the toughest act to follow since Carson (no, not BenâŚ).He did a good job, and like you, Iâm interested to see how he performs in an interview with a weightier subject.
On some sites last night, there were complaints about the number of jokes about race. There were, what three or four? Noahâs race and nationality were the elephants in the room, and I thought it was smart to go ahead and address them. And I also wondered what the hell Daily Show they had been watching where Stewart didnât regularly poke fun at our racial issues?
I enjoyed his performance. I laughed quite a bit. So what if he makes a few more race related jokes than Jon Stewart did, but I have gotten a distinct impression from some of these people complaining about last night that they really donât remember what The Daily Show with Jon Stewart was like.
It just struck me that The Daily Show ill have been on the air for twenty years next year.
I seem to remember that Jon did a lot of Jewish and New Jersey jokes.
Its not just that. Hosting The Daily Show is pretty much a full time gig with a long term commitment. For comedians in particular, thatâs a risky proposition. The Daily Show, however, if successful, will take up all of your time so making movies is harder, and your stand up routine definitely takes a back seat. And you are casting your lot into political watersâŚpretty exclusively. Itâs got to be really hard to go from cracking jokes while discussing serious news items and then trying to do a RomComâŚa bit jarring to the audience.
I think the concern is, are they looking to turn The Daily Show into another version of Larry Whitmoreâs The Nightly Show, where there is a very heavy race focus on events. CC doesnât need two shows like that. I also am guessing that, because its not a woman, or any of a bazillion peoples favorite picks, the tendency to point out that Noah is gonna turn TDS into Larry Whitmoreâs TNS is much higher, true or not.
They went from two white guys to two black guys, and replacing The Colbert Show with a completely different show. You canât change a TV show from monochrome to technicolor without people commenting on the colors.
Well, youâre probably right. I guess I just foolishly expected more from our side. I expected âliberalsâ to be a little more accepting and open-minded. There were less than a handful of jokes where race was mentioned, and usually pretty mildly, yet by some reactions youâd think Louis Farrakhan is the new host.
Have to admit. as much as I liked Jon Stewart, Trevor Noah just killed it during his first show. And I think by this time a change was needed. It was like a breath of fresh air.
Personally, he wasnât my first pick. Or even in my top ten. I would have loved to see Jessica Williams up there, or Samantha Bee. Noah is very young, South African, and yes blackâŚ(as well as male) so he is going to be under a microscope for pretty much his entire first season.
My personal fear, and probably a lot of others, is Noah is going to fall back on one of the above mentioned characteristics to define âhis schtickâ. CC already have an excellent anchor covering the black perspective. I really donât see the South African thing catching on for delivering US News every night. The youth angle might work, but it has a limited shelf life.
Hopefully I am wrong, and he defines himself in some other ways.
Look at the headline story here at TPM.
I was happy with it. I think my mindset of low expectations worked. I convinced myself that following/replacing Stewart would be an impossible task! It worked! Good start!
I forgot to watch.
Itâs on Hulu already, if youâre interested.
