As @lestatdelc posted, a request under §6103(f) does not require “a legitimate legislative purpose” or any other stated reason. However, I would point out to Mr. Mnuchin that a legitimate legislative purpose includes the determination of whether El Trumpo is in violation of the emoluments clause or has committed other “high crimes or misdemeanors” that would invoke the Constitutional authority and duty of the House to impeach him.

The irony of all this is that when the tax returns finally come out (and they will), we’ll see the undervaluation and underreporting and overdeducting and charity fabrication and evasion and all sorts of other shell games and everyone will give a collective shrug because it will be no surprise at all. I honestly think they’re fighting this cause they can. Just to really show up the libs.

Yep, but not in a criminal sense unless there’s some separate crime for dereliction of duty or some such that I’m not aware of. He’s simply failing to do something the law requires of him in his position and therefore a writ of mandamus should issue if one is sought. Next step is issuing the subpoena in order to set up the contempt of congress as well.

Watching Melber, and Neil Katyal is saying that repubs are trying to put Barr’s shenanigans on the same level as Bobby Kennedy and Holder.
Barr couldn’t possibly fit into their shoes or their suits.

His answer was just the typical “you’ll see when we roll out what we have already planned” non-answer and was meant to put on the record that they’re the ones being reasonable and obeying the rules and law. Of course they’ve already spoken to counsel. Some of them ARE counsel. Most of them are VERY well versed in the congressional rules and the law. Don’t be fooled or sent ballistic over that kind of blow-off answer. He just didn’t want to be pinned down until they’ve re-consulted with each other and counsel and decided which red button to push.

It has been said elsewhere on TPM that the once one of these turds sees real consequences for their obstruction it is likely that more will fold.
They can make munchkin the first to taste prison food. That would be fine with me. I think the
tax info would be fortcoming after that, then we’ll see who else becomes more willing to fulfill
requests from the House.

Methinks Mnuchin projects his own fear of these types of documentary requests, especially given his prior financial association with nefarious Russian entities who for some reason(*) decided to put money into his failing movie financing gig.

From personal experience, the too frequent times in my life that a malignancy had been diagnosed, we never sent a letter to the cancer that we would be performing surgery within two weeks unless it relented its goal to destroy me. We were quick to take action and swift with the knife.
This congress has to take ahold of the scapel and excise this Cancer before it kills the patient!
