That was my theory on Bundyville, but what has come of that? Nothing, not even non-confrontational stuff like freezing bank accounts. If this doesn’t get dealt with either, we can only expect to see these “incidents” come up any time the “patriots” get their shorts in a twist about whatever.
From Newsweek:
“There’s a better way to go about things,” said Brandon Curtiss, president of Three Percent of Idaho, a militia group that has been involved in the dispute. “If you want to make a change like that, you need to get the county citizens behind you to go through the proper channels.”
Other militia groups agree, according to the article. And we know the county citizens in this case are supporting the sheriff, not the Bundy group.
“They are waking people up,” said 80-year-old Merlin Rupp, a long-time local resident. “They are just making a statement for us, to wake us up.”
Now it all makes sense:
- Wake up the locals
- ???
Profit???
As a 70 year old white male I am in the “Elderly” demographic. Believe me when I say that not all of us old farts are ranting teabaggers.
After several days of following this story, mostly here on TPM, I have to say I’m appalled by the number of supposed Dems/liberals/progressives itching to see a bloody “solution” to this situation. I loathe gun nuts as much as the next person and am as outraged as anybody at police violence against minorities and lefties in general, but blood-letting is something we should never endorse except as a last, unavoidable resort. Not only is it just plain immoral to shoot people who have not physically harmed anyone, but counter-productive as well, only leading to more of the same, if not worse.
Let them continue to make fools of themselves until they throw in the towel, however long it takes (some skulls are very thick). After which, throw the book at them, including making them pay for all the police hours this is taking.
But violence, no. We are better than that.
He probably would’ve got nominated to be president if he’d gone up to one of the guards, disarmed him, handcuffed him and said to VanillaISIL “I see anybody point a gun at me and it’ll be the biggest mistake he EVER made. You’re under arrest,” and hauled the guard’s carcass away.
And if that were a video I guaran-damn-tee it wouild go viral.
I very much agree…which is ANOTHER group that is being slandered by these kooks’ presence.
Worms is what happens when the leader doesn’t assign ‘snack procurement’ duty.
“Itching” to see? NO. Not in the least. But preventing the bloody solution by virtually guaranteeing no consequences and that this will happen next time? Even worse. What is happening now is a direct result of there not being any fallout for the last time there was an armed confrontation with the authorities.
These are violent, armed, thugs who have taken over federal property. They’re domestic terrorists. And yet they’re allowed to make GROCERY RUNS? When you’re in an armed standoff against armed cops/federal marshals/etc. the solution on the table isn’t “if you stop we’ll let you go home consequence free and take as long as you want to decide because we’ll keep the heat on and let you go get snacks, keeping the local kids out of school in the process” it’s “surrender and go to jail and if you point that gun at us we open fire.”
What you’re essentially witnessing is bad parenting. A bunch of children are doing something very wrong and instead of being punished by being grounded and taking their toys away, they’re being coddled and indulged. Children push boundaries to see just how much they can get away with. Let them come home 10 minutes after curfew with no consequences, then I guarantee you next time it will be 20 minutes.
These are armed criminals and they should be treated as such. Electricity should have been cut off. No supplies in or out. Stand down and surrender to prison time or don’t and get shot should be their options. If these people were trying to rob a bank and got caught, would the proper response be that if they left without taking any money then they could go home?
FredB: you’re absolutely right. I’m another white male, closing in on the demographic myself.
So today’s New York Times editorial on this subject writes this:
"The simple message Mr. Bundy and his band must hear is this: If everyone
with a gripe against the government responded by threatening federal
officials with weapons, America would no longer be a nation governed by
the rule of law. "
AAAGGHHH!!! There not being a place to write a comment there, I’ll offer it here. The simple message Mr. Bundy and his band must hear is this: “Come out with your hands up. You have the right to remain silent, and to representation by an attorney. Anything you say can be used against you a court of law. You are being arrested for using weapons to seize federal property.”
America is not a nation governed by law if armed assault is treated like something you can get a mulligan for, like having a broken tail light: no problem, just remember next time not to use guns.
Say hello to the reaction of the folks in Jordan, MT about the Freemen when the feds had had it up to HERE with their horseshit. The Freemen were nothing but a bunch of bullies who terrorized Musselshell County for years with their bogus liens and when they were arrested, the local cheered.
Say hello to the reaction of the people of Marfa, TX who cheered when Richard McLaren of the Republic of Texas group surrendered to police after an armed standoff after police made it abundantly clear that were not going to just go away after being threatened.
Not everything is Waco or Ruby Ridge.
The sad thing is, a lot of them actually HAVE wives and girlfriends.
Anybody else notice that Y’allQueda took over a bird refuge in the WiNTER when nobody’s around?
If the locals are serious they will refuse to sell snacks and supplies to the perpetrators when they are inexplicably allowed to go shopping!
Well, she was right about that. No one who actually likes wine considers MD the real thing.
Has the Burns community factored in lost income to local convenience stores after the militia (sic.) leaves, and stops buying snacks?
The Bundy family is among many people in the West who contend local officials could do a better job of managing public lands than the federal government.
From the article, but that isn’t what they are contending at all. They think the land belongs to them and they can USE it any way they please and nobody can tell them how they are managing things at all.
Stream bank erosion from overgrazing cattle? Not my problem.
Extinction of some bird species? Who cares, they don’t do my cattle any good, or me.
Out of control range fires due to disruption of local ecology? Where are the Airborne water bombers, where’s the fire jumpers etc.
He meant like literally ‘waking him up’ because at 80, I’ll dadgum guarantee ya that he’s getting in lots of nap time. And, I’m betting his memory isn’t what it used to be so every time he’s ‘woken up’ he thinks it’s morning ; )
The really sad thing is that a lot of them have wives AND girlfriends.
@Rondo: I wonder if that wasn’t what the sheriff was hinting at when he said he hoped the community would put up a “united front” to peacefully resolve the conflict.
