Discussion: Top Senate GOPer Shoots Down Lame Duck Confirmation: 'Makes No Sense'

Discussion for article #247553

Mr. Cornyn, I know you are an asshole supreme, but even you should know that the Republican Party itself has not made any sense since the years 1861 - 1865.

OK, so it’s now obvious the golden age of unified dickishness is now over, to be followed by an extended period of random dickishness, on the way to the ultimate collapse the Republican Party. But I direct your attention to an editorial post here yesterday under the title “Reckoning”:

The Republican party won’t go
anywhere. The R-D two party system has survived for 150 years with a
number different versions of each party operating under those labels.
But I’m skeptical that we go back. And when there’s a break down in one
party’s coalition that almost always destabilizes the other party too.

Emphasis mine, I’m just putting it out there for comment. This was at the end of the article, and was never expanded on. What do you think is meant by this? Does anyone else think the dems are going to be thrown into chaos by the coming GOP implosion? Is that what this means? Is this about Sanders, or just a general foreboding?

the political ecosystem will be out of balance if one of the big species goes extinct.

Bronco Bama succeeds yet again in his dastardly plan to divide the noble Senate GOP and undermine their comity and unity.

All I can think of is that after th 1964 debacle for the Repubs, for various reasons the Dem party moved to the left and in the long run had problems finding itself again. I think President Clinton’s more centrist? position left us in a good place Then Bush stole the election and declared that his slim majority meant he could do whatever he wanted. We got Obama and a more conciliatory tone than Bush but he has not profited by his bipartisan endeavors.

Now with the Repubs falling apart, we might want to push the envelope to much more liberal stances and then we might find ourselves back in 1964.

Take all that with a grain of salt. I’m not a political junkie.

Right now that talk is cheap. Let’s see what he has to say if Clinton is elected.

You know what makes no sense? That grey matter between your ears.

Cornyn’s an attorney, but apparently refuses to recognize that the Constitution clearly says that Supreme Court Justices are appointed by the President, not elected by the people.

Cruz and Cornyn … my home state has two real winners in the Senate. Thanks for your empathy.

Either you (1) de-politicize the nomination process or (2) you give the voters a say in who selects the next Supreme Court Justice, by giving that responsibility to the person who wins the next election. But it’s either one, or the other.

My take on this passage is maybe a little different. I think Josh was referring to the breakdown of the Northern/Southern Democratic coalition due to the Democrats’ decision (finally!) to stop trying to hold a broad national coalition together by opposing civil rights. This drove the Southern wing into the traditionally more pro-civil rights (relatively speaking) Republican Party.

The result was ultimate destabilization of the latter, a condition we’re witnessing in its purest form this election cycle. But we saw the same effects of the destabilization in 1964, and a milder form in 1976, though Reagan proved to be a stronger charismatic figure than expected for the opposing parts of the GOP to rally behind (even after death he’s been a unifying figure for them). What we’re seeing is a natural breakdown of the Reagan coalition and a return of the dysfunctional effects of this destabilization.

And I just signed a petition from the Texas Democratic Party to you telling you to do your damn job.

Gohmert and Abbott are nothing to write home about, either.

I could write a book about how much I dislike Abbott.

Gohmert is too damn stupid to worry about - he’s just comical and pretty perfect for the East Texas district he represents.

There has been a strong argument in Vox’s polyarchy that the parties are going to become less polarized as a result of the Republican Party exploding, followed by a few decades of gradual re-polarization as the parties re-align to make the Democrats a pro-business pro-civil rights party and the Republicans eventually become anti-corporate populist. I don’t know if I subscribe to the theory yet, but it makes sense.

GOP in November, after Hillary wins and Obama withdraws Garland due to GOP obstruction: We want to confirm Garland now. We can do it on Weekend. We can also do it on Christmas Day. Why won’t Obama work with us? Shouldn’t he follow the constitution?

Shoots Down Lame Duck Confirmation: ‘Makes No Sense’

Lame Duck– is already sounding lame.
Continuous repetition is not going to make it a stronger meme.

Cornyn’s time has passed. He doesn’t even realize–
that he’s being trotted out as window-dressing to regurgitate a theme
that is comparable to 3-day-old-baked-goods.
Not even a useful idiot. Merely disposable.
