Discussion: Top LA County Sheriff Official Resigns Over Racist, Sexist Emails

Wow. His chief of staff? And we were all led to believe that McDonnell was such a good guy and if so, then why did he hire a racist scum bag for his chief of staff.

The mind reels at how many of these kinds of incidents happening more and more. And donā€™t forget the shootings of innocent minorities over the last few years. Law enforcement in America needs some drastic overhauls.

TV weather girl said she was expecting 8 inches tonight. I thought to myself, ā€˜fat chanceā€™ with a face like that!ā€

Soā€¦ I guess only the pretty women get big dicks? Thatā€™s a stupid joke for more than one reason.

Shades of Giuliani and Bernie Kerikā€¦

Hereā€™s a thought. Run programs on police email servers looking for offensive words and phrases in emails sent on official accounts. (Theyā€™re not private, both because of employee status and in many cases open records laws.) Review the results and shitcan the cops who repeatedly send or forward this kind of crap. Easy and legal way to weed out the ones prone to discrimination.

Even if the Sheriffā€™s Office had known about Mr. Angelā€™s predilections, the public safety culture would have worked hard to quash the issue and act like nothingā€™s going on. The entire culture of policing needs to open up and be willing to hold itself accountable.

How can anyone trust the police when so many sheriffs and higher-ups are openly racist, sexist, and generally bigoted?

Itā€™s time for a massive overhaul of our law enforcement.

mocked homeless people for being hungry

It is unreasonable to expect him to pass up comedy gold like that.

So there was no group other than white men that he chose not to make fun of? And he passed some ā€˜vettingā€™ process? Wow.

Sadly I think the desire to be over minorities is probably the second most motivating factor for folks to go into law enforcement, if not the first.

The reader could be excused for assuming the photo is of the subject of the story, instead of the man quoted talking smack about the subject. A caption would help to avoid confusion.

I guess Iā€™m not surprised that there are jerks who pass around ā€œjokesā€ like this. But I am a little surprised that they do pass them around to people they work with, on company servers, using their official accounts. Itā€™s basically like sending around a memo saying ā€œI am a bigoted assh*le.ā€

The point in this case is as alwaysā€¦this man had enormous power over Blacks and women and could abuse them with impunity. Nor was this a ā€œ1 Copā€ thing. He felt comfortable sending those emails to other Copsā€¦what does that tell you about the other Cops?

Maybe one day one of these Chiefs will take a second look at whatā€™s being said on the streets. The people are saying that shit like this happens but itā€™s reflexively denied by the Chiefs even when evidence of it, as in this case, is dispositive. BLM and other groups protesting police brutality have it tight. Itā€™s there. Look above and youā€™ll see its foundation.

In all fairness, he was probably the least racist cop in Burbank at the time, itā€™s all relative.

Thatā€™s an excellent point about Burbank for sure. One of the whitest neighborhoods in LA County

Angel was hired by Burbank to reform an agency plagued by misconduct among its officers, according to the Times. The newspaper acquired the emails under the stateā€™s open records laws.

Wow! If this guy was supposed to be the ā€œreformerā€, then exactly how bad was the previous guy?

I wonder if this sort of thinking/non-thinking is what drives cops to become cops in the first place. Iā€™m almost afraid that it is. Iā€™m afraid that this cretin represents the majority of cops.
