Discussion: Top House GOPer: Repeal Bill 'Has Not Been Sold Properly' To Voters

So Pete, I guess you need to work on your sales pitch. “You’re going to pay lots more for coverage or maybe lose it altogether” is not really popular. Who knew?

Amazing - these same 'pubs seemed 100% united during the 60+ repeal votes when they knew that President Obama would veto any repeal that came to his desk yet now they can’t find common ground.

Weak. No, sad!

When you’re telling your constituents to literally “Fuck off and die” it’s very important to have a good sales pitch.
Pfft. Everybody knows that.

Folks, this piece of healthcare legislation is a real beauty. Never been to the hospital even once. If you folks don’t buy it right now, someone else will take it within the hour. I guarantee it. Go kick the tires and see; they are genuine rubber…

People were sold that the ACA did not work and needed to be replaced, and replaced with something better, thats what most voters wanted who voted for the gop. It is hard to sell voters that millions will lose insurance, everyone will pay more, and rural hospitals will close is better — maybe the Russian folks can help the gop with that messaging.

it tells you how Republicans view their constituents… as rubes that can be marketed to like you were selling the new brand of dip…

it also tells you how good ‘businessman extraordinaire’ Cheeto Donnie is… he can’t even close the deal in his own party let alone help sell it to constituents…

Translated Pete: This is hard: we haven’t figured out how to convince folks that dying young is good for them. Our bad.

The people back home are not sold on what we’re doing yet

Much the same way the Jews weren’t completely sold on the “Arbeit macht frei” program.

Wow. On the one hand - I think he was shaken up by that raucus town hall last weekend. The one where he told folks essentially that they don’t listen, that he was going to vote for repeal and replace (despite them) and they started chanting “Vote Him Out”. He didn’t show he was shaken - but clearly this statement is much less firm (than the full steam ahead despite you folks! attitude that he displayed on the video of the town hall.)

It also shows that he needs to do some work selling - more effectively than smacking down his constituents with of course you’re frustrated because You Don’t Listen (as opposed to of course you’re frustrated, because health care is important and you are fearful of how it might change, but that would require giving a f*ck.)

You know who’s going to be an especially hard sell, Pete? The people this legislation will fucking kill. You’ve got your work cut out for you, persuading them how right and necessary to the greater good their deaths are.

You are having such a rough time getting Part One done we all know you will head for the hills when the imaginary Parts 2 and 3 are discussed.

Is he trying to set up Trump for the blame?

Or, as Trump might say: You guys are lousy liars, let me show you how to do this!

“But members also are having problems with people back home, and that’s the problem. It’s the people back home who are being very vocal, who are in a lot of these conservative groups that do not understand the bill because it has not been sold properly to them. That’s the real problem. Not the President. Not whether they do or don’t want to vote,” Sessions said. “The people back home are not sold on what we’re doing yet, and that’s partially my fault also. I’ve tried to take the time to explain to the American people why we’re doing this, but we recognize it’s back home voter, not Washington, D.C. voter.”

Interesting that he’s not blaming “outside liberal agitators”…

“Gee whiz guys, It’s so hard to sell! People are too stupid to understand what we’re offering them!”

[snark]Remember, folks. These are Republicans. The party of business super-geniuses who worship John Galt, hallowed be his name. [/snark]

What is there to sell. Twenty Four Million lose coverage, people over 50 can no longer afford insurance. It is a totally fucked up bill. I don’t know how you put lipstick on that pig.

This is a bit of circular reasoning, no? When I tell people I don’t like mole chicken–or mole anything–someone usually says, “Oh, you just haven’t had GOOD mole.” To which I always say, “Yes, precisely.”

This just wasn’t effectively marketed because its marketing wasn’t effective. Yes, precisely. Of course, that might be because it tastes like healthcare policy’s version of burnt mocha.

Especially since he faced a loud and angry town hall meeting over the weekend. He easily could have played the fake news “bused in liberal protesters”, but he didn’t. I think that is significant.

Phone calls and letters and protests work. Pour it on.
