Senate Republicans are, effectively, Trump cultists. It would be a gift to them for the House to impeach Trump. The best House Dems can to is to make his life so miserable, and his hold on power so tenuous, that the cultists see their future circling the drain. Only then will they abandon him.
The Repugs in the Senate will only turn on Trump when it is politically expedient, regardless of the crimes he has committed. Susan Collins may even get concerned at some point but I don’t think that even the so-called moderates have the gumption to vote yes on articles of impeachment.
Of course the politicians have to act conservatively regarding the issue of impeachment. It is very important to not get too far ahead of this issue. So this will be a slow walk, and may be nothing happens in the next two years.
I think Adam Schiff is right, the big question is if the next President pardons Trump. So, bad as it is, and it is stunningly bad, there may be no impeachment and the next elected President may decide Trump’s fate.
And I for one think it would be a travesty of justice that Trump not go to jail based on what crimes we know he committed. The question now is only will they be able to prove particular crimes adequately and how many, what crimes will he face? So the next election cycle again becomes critical.

I’m not so sure i appreciate the gravity of this statement. Either put up, or shut up. Don’t tease!
As much as I want this bastard gone, there is something to be said for emasculating him with constant revelations of his corruption, graft and sleaze. Break his support and let the repug scum in the Senate watch their hold slip away. Make him the albatross on the necks of those traitors and let it pull them down.
Democrats will need to divide the labor efficiently. Intelligence and Judiciary can plow forward investigating, but all the other committees need to get a budget going while civil, voting and labor rights rights are strengthened. Every kick and scream from every Rumpublican is one more reason to throw out every last one of them.

I finally got to listening to Slow Burn over the weekend, and while I already knew a lot about Watergate itself, it was striking how similar the investigation went to the one into Trump. No doubt they framed it that way to emphasize the parallels, but there’s still this emphasis in the general narrative that it was a bipartisan Congressional investigation that led to the right outcome. When really the Republicans were running interference for Nixon a lot, with staffers passing on committee info to the White House and R Senators proposing the same kind of absurd investigations of Democrats as the real culprits that Gowdy et al. are doing now.
It wasn’t until the tapes came out and Nixon fired Cox that the GOP even started to turn on him, and even then it took nearly a year after it was obvious the president had committed crimes to debate whether impeachment was appropriate. Of course, the tapes just showed Nixon to be in private the kind of person Trump is in public…
Democrats need to take their time: wait until Trump’s guilt is obvious to everyone, and his support erodes to the point where continuing in office is unsustainable. It is important to do this right.
Among other things it must be clear to any reasonable person that Trump goes out of office because of his own corruption and incompetence rather than because of any supposed “partisan hit job by Democrats” that can be used a future rallying point.

I have this recurring dream of trump nailed by a combo RICO and tax fraud indictment. And he gets arrested in the Oval Office by FBI agents and frog marched to a waiting van. This means he loses all his money. In the dream there are two endings. One, he is seen competing to wash car windows with other homeless folk at the exit of the Holland tunnel… he then feeds some pigeons and sleeps on a hard park bench. The other ending has him under a bridge somewhere with his worldly possessions in a stolen shopping cart… and it’s raining… and he gets busted for the cart.
Let’s see how many republican senators can be shaken out of the tree with Buttina flipping and the Russian NRA money laundering script laid out for public viewing.
Truly a hated man.
