The proper way to retire a flag is burning it…

El Duce will now be deciding who retains and who loses their citizenship.

There was a time when mistreating the flag was a crime, and Republicans were always up in arms about it.

Times have changed, so I’m not sure Trump will be able to roll the clock back on that one.

Example here:

Disrespecting the flag in that particular manner used to get you arrested.

McCarthy is, of course, right to put a damper on this issue. But he just can’t help himself–“my neck of the woods”. We all know the dog whistle here. He means that flag-burning is some kind of blue state, urban, liberal effete activity.

Rep. Sean. Duffy (R-WI) said that “the court is probably right that we want to protect those people who want to protest, and their right to actually demonstrate with disgracing our flag, even though so many of us who love our country and love our flag object to it.”

It’s wimpy! It’ nonsensical! It’s Duffywimpisensical!

I wouldn’t be so sure that Kennedy sides with the Conservatives if HO appoints an ideologues to the Court.

I worry that Trump is a true master. In direct response to his off-the-wall out-of-nowhere tweet, we get , pictures of flag-burning front and center. Making it look like it’s actually happening right now.

You media folk are suckers beyond the dreams of P. T. Barnum.

Yet.

Republicans are the party of war, don’t forget that. And a war is a good way to get all of us to get in line with the program.

How does tweeting about flag burning or flag burners, bring american jobs back to this country. How does it improve our healthcare system? How does it improve Medicare? How does it better protect this country from enemy nations?

The short answer is it doesn’t do any of these things. If Drumpf was correct then our free speech would be infringed. Maybe it is distasteful to burn a flag, but it is also distasteful to make fun of the handicap, to pick on immigrants, to cheer another death https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2016/11/26/marco-rubio-castro-will-be-remembered-as-evil-murderous-dictator/ . . . there are many distasteful elements in our society and I suffer through them because I believe in the US constitution and the rights it enables for its citizens. Do you?

Don’t worry, I have more faith in my military overlords than it may seem. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve been asking the question about what happens when he forces that issue though. When they finally cause some REAL riots so they can enforce martial law on minority inner city communities…how does the split take place? What happens when people say “I won’t fucking do this for you…not to my own people, my own communities, my fellow citizens?” What happens when he orders national guard about to quell legitimate protests and stop dissent? How far down Milgram’s Primrose Path do we have to go before people in the military or similar organizations start saying “no”?

I’ve been wondering about how long this very successful GOP scheme of minority rule can survive before there are real riots. Or was fanning the flames of enraged protest the plan?

My view is that things will likely explode around the inauguration.

I suppose it will depend somewhat on the weather. But I expect his more devolved supporters to go on a rampage. I hope I’m wrong but that’s what I am concerned about right now.

I just had another awful thought. If we repeal the first amendment, would that move the second amendment up to first place?

That’s not happening. The rightwing uses the 1st as a weapon - they aren’t getting rid of it.

Technically no, for the same reason that repealing #18 required the passage of #21 and didn’t cause anything to be renumbered.

Non-technically, I love the question.
