Discussion: Today's The Day The House Repeals Obamacare ... Or Not!

What’s in Paul Ryan’s bag? Is it stuff to get votes from conservatives? I can only wonder what that would be.

Yet some conservatives are demanding that even more of the Affordable Care Act’s regulations, like coverage of pre-existing condition, also be stripped.

Ghouls. Evil little men that want nothing more than to make sure life in America is as hard as possible.

As of 9 a.m., the vote had not been scheduled. The House Rules Committee had not finished its markup of the bill after 13 hours of debate, and was scrambling Thursday to override the House policy of forbidding same-day votes on bills. A planned meeting of the House Republican Conference was canceled at the last minute, but lawmakers who hadn’t received that memo were seen wandering into the room. Negotiations on major policy changes that would impact millions of people are ongoing, making the likelihood of a Congressional Budget Office analysis of the final bill before the vote close to zero.

Wednesday night was equally chaotic, as pressure from the White House and GOP leaders failed to win over either the moderate or hardline conservative wings of the Republican Party.

Ah, so this is what “regular order” means. Was wondering.

I wouldn’t count on this NOT passing. Remember that this is an intra-squad scrimmage among the Rs, which they can make look like a real game when it’s just an opportunity to posture. In the end, they can claim that all that theater made it “so much better” and that Trump was a hero for negotiating (what was probably arranged well beforehand) and this is a huge victory for the American people, Obamacare awful, blah, blah, blah.

Watching this stuff since Reagan, the Rs always find a way and excuse to tow the party line and get what they want from their members. This has all those markings and the media, of course, falls for it again and again. There’s really no difference between the so-called moderates and the so-called freedom caucus (no caps or quotes undeserved) except for sales style. They all just want to help their friends, punish their enemies, and stay in charge. The actual impact on people is irrelevant to them.

After screaming about Obamacare killing the economy (a huge lie) for nearly a decade, they will have to repeal it and whatever they “replace” (this deserves quotes) it with, even with nothing, they will declare the greatest thing ever and just argue that line forever, bashing Ds and Obamacare the entire time. This goes for the Senate, too, BTW.

Anyone laying odds on it passing? I’m looking to place a wager.

So they have to break all kinds of rules, precedents, and traditions (no same day vote from committee, no CBO score first, etc. etc. etc.) JUST so they can override the bill on an anniversary date. Such petty, foolish monsters.

I won’t place a bet. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if it passes the Senate in some form. Don’t listen to what they say, watch what they do.

I was wondering the same. Looks like he’s heading to a week long soccer tourney.

So all this hurrying up with this incredibly bad bill was designed to have some sort of symbolic meaning re: the same day ACA passed? That tells us all we need to know about a) the vindictiveness of Republicans, and b) the vacuity of Republicans. :unamused:

This has as much chance of passing as Donald Trump did of becoming President.

Everyone should read this https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/23/upshot/late-gop-proposal-could-mean-plans-that-cover-aromatherapy-but-not-chemotherapy.html? Having a tax credit with no rules for what "insurance’ must cover is an open invitation to fraud. Just watch every spa at every Trump resort offer a $ 1,995 package of massages and aromatherapy under the guise of “insurance”. A clean total repeal would be better and according to the CBO would actually result in fewer losing coverage.

They will figure out a way to pass it. Screw Obama, screw the country, who cares? We want a win. How 24 million people losing health coverage is a win, I’m not sure. But nevertheless, it will be floated as a win and the media will join the chorus.

The funniest part is Paul Ryan, Great Wonk and Spending Hawk, throwing billions of dollars and rule changes at blue state Republicans in a desperate attempt to get their votes. (Upstate) New York and Illinois have already extracted major gains from the wimp, and I expect the California delegation to take an arm and a leg. And if that happens, it won’t be deficit-neutral…

It’s no “gain” for Upstate NY, merely a cost-shifting from counties to the state.

I hope this flushes that idiot Ryan down the loo. Republicans can’t lead, they can only snipe. Thank God!

It’s a gain because NYC is excluded - hence why the Staten Island GOP Rep is pissed - so southern counties would still be on the hook for themselves but would subsidize upstate.

I think the major question is how afraid they are of their base. They want the ACA repealed and will be demoralized if it isn’t. Some conservatives will be primaried if they don’t vote for it, but others might be if they do. My bet is that the most draconian heartless shitstorm of a bill will be the final version (the F-AHCA, if you will), and that will pass.

Flip side though. The day after this becomes law, the GOP owns EVERY bad news story on health care, and it will get very very bad, very very quickly. There are probably not enough house members that care about that, given the way districts are drawn, but there may be 3 senators who do.

I already think it isn’t. Not sure if the new expanded tax credits have real numbers or if I am misremembering, but I thought they were upping that to 85 billion. Wouldn’t that change alone eat up the 35 billion per year it was supposed to save?
