Discussion: To Avoid Shutdown, GOP Hoping Trump Will Embrace $5 Billion Wall Funding Plan

Great!!! Shut down the government while the Repugs are still in control of both houses of Congress. 2020 will be here before you know it.

Big baby needs to be pacified before he shuts down the government. Just exactly how does that work anyway? I thought shutting down the government was a thing the Republicans in charge of one of the Houses of Congress did to get their way with a Democratic President who instinctively wanted to keep the government open.

First, I thought an initial $5 billion dollars was already considered to be acceptable to Der Drumpfenfuehrer, so I’m wondering whether this is really news. Second, this requires 60 votes in the Senate. Why in the world would the Democrats, who have already rejected this figure, accept it without major concessions (possibilities include protection for Mueller, extension of DACA) that are likely to be anathema to our Dear Leader? (Of course, Chuck Schumer is a thin reed to pin your hopes on. He’s no Reid or Pelosi. If either Der Drumpfenfuehrer or McConnell had shown the slightest interest in offering the most minimal concessions to the Democrats instead of insisting on a maximalist Rethuglican agenda with zero Democratic input, Chuck likely would have happily already given away the store.)

Trump, Miller and Nielsen are deliberately issuing directives to the Border Patrol and ICE designed to provoke violence, hoping to gin up support for border wall funding. Trump would love nothing better than for agents of either agency to suffer a fatality or two in some melee that resulted solely due to the asylum/border crossing clusterfuck they’ve engineered. Mow down a few “criminal/gang/cartel” migrants in a hail of gunfire and declare an emergency at the border.

It’s coming.

What about tear gas funding to be used on children?
Or troop funding to protect us from unarmed folks.
If Trump gets funding for anything that hurts innocent people he might forget about the wall.

The Republican brain trust struggles with ways to keep their own man-baby from shutting down the government while they are in control of all branches. Sounds about right. FOX will present this as a noble stand by Trump to protect the American people, and every time anything happens, whether related to immigration or not, Trump will proclaim that it would not have happened had they just built his wall. I say give him his wall in exchange for a restoration of DACA and a return to normal asylum processing procedures at the border - but that would require sanity and functional government, two things that are totally non-existent as long as Trump is in office.

I thought the Mexicans were going to pay for the wall.

Dems should say they’re all in for the wall as soon as Trump makes a deal for Mexico to pay for it, as promised. They can pass this along to Trump or his Drumpfpartei lackies – it’s the contact info for the President of Mexico:

Rethugs want to keep the idiot-in-chief happy so he won’t shut down the government and therefore make them look worse than they already do. They’re probably worried this will get used against them in 2020.
No wall!!!

He dismissed the idea but indicated that anything less than $5 billion would be unacceptable, because he’s the world’s worst deal-maker and just gave away his leverage to get more.

I hope the Democrats can shove that $1.6 billion down his throat–it’s an insult, you’d pay more for one new destroyer–but we’ll see. He’s very weak now, but the Democrats need to come off as the party of responsible governance and shutdowns don’t really help with that. If they’d deal for DACA and Mueller I’d say let the baby have his bottle. It’s a small win for him but he’s already claiming they’re building it so WTF.

“Gee fellas, he’s dragged us down into the mud, and I don’t know about you, but it doesn’t always sit right with me that he conspired against america with russia. I mean, late at night, after the wife and kids are in bed, don’ t you sometimes think we might have gotten our tax cuts another way? He’s the stupidest man I ever met - and I spent a weekend with Dan Quayl for god’s sake. The wall is useless, you know it, I know it.”
“It’s lockstep with us or out.”
“OK, ok, I was just thinking
”
“Well knock it off and give him the damned funding. We’re powerless now.”

Why in the world would the Democrats accept this under any circumstances? Caving on this, even if they get something substantial in return, gives Trump a big symbolic win.

NO, just NO.

ETA: Trump has had control of the government for two years, and could not get this done. Any failure here is completely on him. DO NOT help your enemy when he is failing.

I have noticed a giant uptick in posts from my MAGA friends and family concerning the bunch at the border near Tijuana. You would think it was a full scale war and we are losing. Fox News must be working overtime.

No doubt the 101st Airborne is on alert status. At Trump’s orders.

Wow back in the day, wall for DACA was something Schumer was willing to do wasn’t it? Back when asylum-seeker processing was still normal. I think Chuck wanted protection for Dreamers that much – and foresaw far into the future how these folks would be an asset to our country. When donald blew it - seems like Schumer said something like ‘that was the best deal you could have gotten’.

[/quote]The whole bunch buys into to the fear of the caravan. sad to say.

It’s where we are now
and a success for the spoiled-child negotiating tantrums that donald does. What is best for the USA is probably zero money for the wall. What ever donald gets from this drama is more than he should get
period. I agree with those who should play loops over and over and over of him saying that Mexico will pay for the wall. Meanwhile he and his henchmen will try to make things so ugly that maybe Mexico will cough up some to solve a problem that is largely of donald’s making.
I’ve also heard that Canada would take in the refugees. Kind of makes one wonder what’s wrong with the USA.
Stumbled on a right-wing radio station by mistake and was sort of amazed at how they wove together the idea of Democrats wanting decent treatment for immigrants because that way there would be more illegal voters to vote for Democrats. To that mindset it all goes together, and the only reason that there was a huge blue wave was that “illegals” were voting. So that means anyone who didn’t vote for a Republican. LOL

Everything Republicans do is geared toward preserving the privilege of the rich, the Christians, and the white males. Thirty and forty years ago they were busily breaking the power of what unions remained then. They always wanted to go after the New Deal safety nets, and now they’re doing that. Blacks, women, Hispanics, gays, anyone who’s been threatening or is perceived as threatening the exclusive status of the privileged has to be beaten down. Since demographic trends don’t favor them, they’ve abandoned democracy. There’s very little we’re seeing now that isn’t explained by that.
