Discussion: Tlaib Wins Conyers' Seat, Will Be First Muslim Woman To Serve In Congress

I’m confused. First paragraph and headline say she won. Second paragraph says the race was too close to call as of Wednesday morning.

There were actually two races: one to serve out the rest of the unexpired current term and the other to be nominated for the November election.

From the article:

Former Michigan state Rep. Rashida Tlaib has won the Democratic nomination to run unopposed for the House seat long held by former Rep. John Conyers, setting her up to become the first Muslim woman elected to Congress.

No Republicans or third-party candidates ran in Tuesday’s District 13 primary race, meaning Tlaib is set to win the seat in November’s election and begin serving a full two-year term in January. The special primary race to serve the last two months of Conyers’ term was still too close to call.

“Rashida Tlaib brings forward the legacy of John Conyers in terms of the groundbreaking role he played in Congress and his commitment to civil rights.”

I remember Conyers winning the seat in '64. It was a good thing — and he had a good run in Washington. I don’t know enough about the recent charge of sexual harassment to comment fairly. Pelosi handled it, and I’ve been assuming she handled it well.

In any event, Tlaib’s victory is also a good thing. The more women in power the better — and she, in particular, is an excellent judge of many things.

Thank you! I was confused, too. Congratulations Rashida! Congress lookin’ more and more like America every day.

Thank you for the clarification. This article could have been written with more clarity concerning the two races.

“Will Be First Muslim Woman To Serve In Congress”

Just a moment think the Democratic party should be proud of this as I am sure many are.
