“Rex Tillerson downplayed the significance of the U.S. pullout from the Paris climate pact…”

Says the guy who worked at Exxon for 40 years.

Sitting on 600,000 company shares.

And another $54 million in options.

Totally believable.

Rest of world rallies around climate deal

European Council President Donald Tusk said after meeting Chinese Premier Li Keqiang that the two powers took their responsibilities seriously.
“Today, China and Europe have demonstrated solidarity with future generations and responsibility for the whole planet,” he told reporters at a joint news conference.
"We are convinced that yesterday’s decision by the United States to leave the Paris agreement is a big mistake, bigger than not ratifying the Kyoto Protocol, because Paris is fairer.

“But the fight against climate change and all the research, innovation and technological progress it will bring will continue with or without the United States.”
Mr Tusk was echoing similar pledges by EU politicians such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel who said the path set out by Paris was “irreversible”.

So Tillerson is saying that his boss is a stupid attention hog who doesn’t know what he’s talking about?

This is from an article on the Guardian site. We can probably all stop jumping up and down. Donald will be gone and the U.S will be staying.

The US can pull out of the Paris agreement no earlier than 3 November 2020 – which happens to be the day of the next US presidential election. This is because article 28 of the Paris agreement, which the Trump administration says it will abide by, states that a nation can only submit a withdrawal three years after the agreement entered force – 4 November 2016. This withdrawal then takes effect one year later.

“Tillerson called it a policy decision by the president.”

I would prefer to call it a jackass move by the president, but whatever. Kind of amazed he is making a not-towing-the-Trump-line policy statement.

Is this the first time Tillerson has made an actual policy statement on anything or is this the first time I/we paid any attention to him or the first time I was inclined to believe him?

That would be quite a challenge for such a committed grifter.

Exactly - this whole thing is meaningless political kabuki. It’s Trump’s temper tantrum with the EU for giving him a piece of cake with no rose on it at the G7 meetings. “Everybody else got a rose! I should have had a whole bouquet!”

By the time our withdrawal is triggered we’ll have a different president. Either that or by then it won’t matter anymore.
