It’s a bit odd that the Sec. of State and POTUS would be unhappy with sanctions being imposed on a country that just tried to take down American Democracy. Unless of course there are extenuating circumstances…like major oil deals with GazProm and feelings of indebtedness for the help Russia gave Trump.
Sooner or later, relations with Russia will need to be improved on a real basis. I just don’t see how we can expect much from Tillerson or Trump.
At the very minimum, there are questions about the relationship Tillerson and Trump have with Putin. And there’s Putin’s bad behavior on a wide range of issues. Including interfering with last year’s American elections.
There’s also a side issue that isn’t ignorable. Putin refuses to take global warming seriously. There are ways for a well-informed president and a well-informed Secretary of State to work effectively around that while maintaining a relationship with Putin on mutual issues. Trump is useless in that regard. And Tillerson may only be minimally better than Trump on a range of Russian related issues. And of course we still don’t understand what Trump’s relationship was with Russia before entering the White House. It’s a problem that Tillerson seems to yield too much to Trump, who is essentially incompetent and uninformed.
Nor am I. The Sox really sucked in July while the Yankees turned it around and landed some big fish before the trade deadline. Meanwhile, when the hell is Trump going to get that outlandish signature on the sanctions bill?
The Russians don’t put you in time out or cancel your club memberships. You best know if you deal with them the consequences are severe if you do not deliver. I have no sympathy.
I’ll bet the FBI Financial Crimes unit knows or, more likely, already knew. Plus, ace Fraud Section Chief Andrew Weissmann has joined the Russian investigation.
