This is unfortunate. These people will still be in “limbo.”
Paxton is a dipshit, and an asshole who should be in jail.
Once again, Texas does their best to fuck up the world for everyone else.
“a victory for those who believe in the separation of powers and the rule of law,”
You mean rules of law like the Advice and Consent Subclause of the Appointments Clause? I think not.
He conveniently would like to ignore the law that he personally violated on the principle that IOKIYAR
Yeah, the “unelected activist judges!” tirade was quickly trashed.
Disappointing. I’m surprised SCOTUS didn’t latch onto the standing argument, which I thought was a good one.
But even on the merits, it’s difficult to wrap one’s head around this. Unless Congress appropriates enough money to deport every single undocumented immigrant in the country, the Executive has no choice but to make some kind of enforcement decisions. Is it the position of the petitioners in this case that enforcement should be completely random? If not, then what decision-making process are they demanding?
Well that sucks.
All the more reason why we have to make sure Clinton is elected.
While it’s certainly the case that Hispanic/Latino citizens already have ample reason to vote against Trump and the Republican Party, this decision highlights how imperative it is to register to vote, and then get to the polls.
All the more reason why we have to make sure Clinton is elected.
And take back the Senate.
This is a major opportunity for Clinton to hammer the GOP/Teatrolls in the Senate mercilessly for the benefit of her downballot senate Dems, not to mention that she should immediately begin using this to spin a constant theme throughout the rest of her campaign that IT’S THE SCOTUS, STUPID. These fuckers eviscerated the Constitution for precisely this reason…perhaps even precisely for this particular case. They deliberately broke the government and now want to crow about a broken SCOTUS non-decision as if it is an actual decision in their favor establishing that the law is what they claim it is? WRONG. This belongs up their bungholes from now until November and I’ll be fucking pissed if Clinton fails to capitalize.
I’ll be fucking pissed if Clinton fails to capitalize.
Inasmuch as Clinton has talked about turning Texas blue, I don’t think we have to worry about that. From a purely partisan standpoint, this decision has the benefit of making the stakes clear.
Edit: Hillary’s on this: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/clinton-scotus-obama-immigration
Of all the things to worry about HRC—no candidate is perfect, not even Obama—I don’t think this particular issue is one of them. It’s too tied to long-term Democratic success, and Hillary’s short term success as well.
Need I say that this is just one more reason why it is imperative to elect Hillary Clinton in November? This will come before the court again, probably in the term after next. By then, let us hope and (if your beliefs permit) pray that the court has a “liberal” majority.
Not all by its lonesome. It is her job to get out there and make the case, using this to tap into the emotional viscera of the voters, most of whom are not even remotely as informed about these things as us politinerd junkies.
in 2000 200,000 Florida “progressives” voted for Ralph Nader, because as we all know, Gore, Bush II, were one the same.
Bush put Alito and Roberts on the Court, they were two of the 4 votes here.
We currently have a vacancy on the Court, and the next President (and only a disillusion person thinks it is going to be Jill Stein) will pick the judge that will either allow (Clinton) or prohibit (Trump) immigration reform.
This is just another example to everyone of the possible consequence of Bernie’s ongoing Ralph Nader imitation.
And the congress (yes, a long shot) - Ryan and the GOP have shot themselves in the foot over this gun control thing.
I don’t blame Bernie, I blame his batshit insane followers, including some of my very close friends who have lost their goddamned minds.
Speaking of which. Isn’t Bernie going to make yet another I’m-going-to-stop-Trump-from-being-president speech?
The republican judges (lets just call them what they are) only did it because they did not have to defend it in a written opinion. If the 4 conservatives had to write an opinion saying there was standing it would have opened up the flood gates to all kinds of suits they have tried to prevent in the past. No way they believed there was standing. But rather than honestly following what they believed was the law (no standing) they chose to ignore the issue, knowing that the result would be 4-4 and they would not have to write an opinion.
This is a fundamentally results oriented and non-judicial action by them, and shows that they are not truly conservatives, they are political hacks.
He is egging them on by not talking reality to them. Put another way he has been for months, and continues to be, a facilitator for their craziness.
90% of my “bernie backer” friends (I do live in San Francisco, after all) have come arround, but the last few would be helped by a real push by Bernie, a push that has not come…
He needs to take one of these times (this decision is a good opportunity) to say that the differences in not supporting Hillary and supporting her are massive, immense, and have like today, very real consequences. He also needs to call out the impact of supporting a 3rd party as resulting in things like today.
Unfortunately, I think Bernie’s ego will not let him do this, and as a result he will just fade away into a grump old Nader-like man.
