Discussion: Three 2020 Dems Reprimand House Leadership For Handling Of Omar Rebuke

Rep. Omar criticized the influence the Israeli lobby has on Congress, and got immediate blow-back from that lobby using their favorite club to shut down discussion: antisemitism.

Well, they need to lose, and lose big time on this. Omar didn’t call for a “final solution to the Jewish problem,” or go chanting “Jews will not replace us,” but torchlight. She pointed out that AIPAC spends a lot of money, “Benjamins,” lobbying Congress.

With any luck, we can use this to push back on AIPAC, and by extension, Likud, Netanyahu and the whole settler movement. I’m very tired of having that tail wag my government.

Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA)

I only see two Dems.

OT (although I guessed the 3 before seeing their names), I want to know why Sanders is afforded full dress designation as a Democratic candidate. It has always bothered me that he has been an Independent until he wants to run for President. Then he wants to take full advantage of the structure of the Democratic Party, including its primaries and debates. Those are things not otherwise available to him as an independent. There is no independent party, of course.
I don’t think I would begrudge it so much if he hadn’t so frequently bitten the hand that has fed him, the worst example, of course, being his belated and less than enthusiastic embrace of the Democratic candidate once he lost. You can be damn sure he would have expected Hillary to get right behind him if he had won the nomination - something she did when she lost to Obama.

Edit: it’s not every day that you get called an A-hole and silly in replies to your post. I must be doing something right.

Sanders needs those people who think both parties are sell-outs. I guess he thinks the longer he keeps that I after his name, the better he’ll do with that group.

He’s just as much of a sell-out on other issues, however. Let’s also see those taxes.

SANDERS is DEMOCRAT the same way TRUMPF is a REPUBLICAN.

I agree with Bernie on this one, but here is what I think about Bernie going forward:

Bernie will most likely not get the Nomination. He then will have two options: run as a Third Party candidate (causing us to lose the General) or going back to the Senate in peace. I hope he chooses the latter option.

I know! And I counted twice!

I hope the third and obvious choice for Bernie is early retirement, if that’s even possible as his age?

He perfectly empodies the modern party? I don’t have as big a problem with Sanders as some, but I don’t think I would agree with that statement.

The GOP has overplayed its hand, perhaps intentionally, to troll Dems into punishing their own and to just cause trouble in the caucus. Omar got herself into this mess with a poor choice of words (for the 2nd time) but the amount of attention paid to her with the implicit threats that are coming with it is unacceptable. You can’t single her out and not call out the white men in the room who routinely carve out space for politically incorrect and racist stuff. I would ignore the whole thing at this point if I were the Dems, confiscate Omar’s social media accounts for the next 2 months, and call it a day. At most, I’d support a resolution that condemned anti-semitism in general, but I wouldn’t even do that at this point.

I think Elliot Engel had a large role in this whole affair. Pelosi ought to tell Sanders, Harris and Warren, “Must be nice being in the minority in your chamber of Congress and be running for President.”

Opinions are like rectums, everyone has one. Saunders is running as a Democrat…just as he did before. Sanders seems to have the wind in his sail as well, look at the poll numbers.

I see Russia is moving to enact a law against “disrespecting government.”

Is that where we’re going? To empower Trump to make sure everyone is nice to murderous Crown Princes and Kremlin despots?

Because anyone can sign up.

If the Democratic Party were to see no advantage for itself in letting him sign up and run as a Democrat, what do you think the Democratic Party would do?

That would be a truly stupid thing to do (or even attempt).

It is very encouraging to hear these senators’ statements. We have got to get beyond the automatic knee-jerk reactions whenever any perceived criticism of any “sacred cow” in the political sphere is voiced.

All governments, both friend and foe, sometimes do things that warrant legitimate criticism. In the case of Israel, there has long been a very strong reaction to label all criticism of its government’s policies as anti-Semitic. The Palestinians have been treated with inhumane harshness and cruelty for decades at the hands of the Israeli government, and there is no way to sugarcoat that fact.

It’s another way of saying ‘don’t tweet’.

Yes, it is.

Still not a good idea, no matter how we say it.

Only 'two dems"? Seriously, since when did labels become more important than core character? Bernie is not a “Democrat” because he’s closer to FDR than the modern party. Guess what? The party is re-joining him. The next president will be in FDR’s, not Bill Clinton’s, mold.
