Discussion for article #238883
Many migrants have relatives in the U.K., there is a thriving labor black market there and the migrants have unreasonable expectations of a social safety net. They are definitely not going there for the bangers and mash.
PS. Think it’s bad now, wait till till full on global climate change hits in mid century.
Trump could fix this in a heartbeat by building a wall in the middle of the Chunnel.
And he’d make France pay for it.
When a country takes steps to limit emigration, they are behaving in an economically reasonable manner. Population growth is the easiest way to grow an economy, and population decline spells long term decline. The states who are restricting emigration, therefore are reasonable, but few would argue “moral.”
Those who control immigration, however, are neither economically wise nor morally correct. Open immigration is the primary reason the United States became the economic super power it is today. By forcing migrants to live in camps, cut off from the economy, we are literally wasting vast amounts of human capital, while simultaneously creating a morally untenable situation.
The place of your birth should not control what rights you have for the rest of your life.
The only way we can make it through the next 100 years without bitter wars over climate migration will be open borders. The alternative is war and famine.
Given the past “popularity” of wars and famine, and the intractableness of human behavior, you’ll excuse me if I take a pessimistic view of our chances.
Cue a Trump tweet, soundbite or foreign trip (he can still make that Scotland golf thing) on this topic in 3, 2, 1…
Every word in your comment is incorrect. Are you an illegal, BTW?
The only solution to our problems is limitation of fertility. Societies that do not limit fertility are doomed, and we successful countries have no responsibility for them. Compare Haiti and the DR. We must limit illegals, and they must be returned to their societies.
Please do not make such ridiculous broad stroke rejections to accepted economics because it doesn’t feel right to you or something. Furthermore, you should now that the word “illegal” when applied to a person is a slur. It is not illegal to be born.
Your ideas of population control are ridiculous. China is facing a demographic disaster because of their policies.
You argue that despite hundreds of years of economic scholarship, that we should adopt the inhumane and evil policies of communist China and the bigoted D.R.
So, your solution is to control women’s bodies?
Where I was born is not relevant (Oregon). Calling someone an illegal is still a slur. Referring to peoe born in bad situations who decid to live scum because of where they are born demonstrated the xenophobia and racism that are the basis of your argument.
You are an evil little man with a small heart.
You should go to Europe. It’s a small place. There is no room for millions and millions of skill-free persons looking for handouts. No one in Europe is stupid like American morons about illegals. They all want them out. No one wants the illegals, most of whom are victims of stories told by the African coyotes, who run the smuggling operations to make money. Others are victims of their own civil wars, like those in Eritrea, Syria, Afghanistan, and dozens of other countries which cannot run their own social systems properly. Your naive confusion about the world is kind of amazing. Why not give your house and possessions to a bunch of illegals? That’s what you want for Europe - what gives you the right to give away their land, jobs, and other goods?
“I spoke to many there”
Now there’s some science!
You have yet to provide a credible argument for your claims about migration. Adding workers grows the economy. Immigrants are not looking for a handout, they are looking to work and contribute to the economy. You, and most of Europe, continue to allow bigotry to get in the way of a golden economic opportunity. If the UK opened its doors and granted citizenship to all who held a job in the UK for more than 2 years, they would experience an economic boom. That’s just basic economics. More people = more workers = more consumers = bigger economy. This is not fiction or made up. This is basic, obvious, economics.
I wasn’t on a scientific trip after the first 3 days. I was there to drink beer, eat good food, take pictures, and see stuff. It was a vacation. Unlike you, I know a lot of Europeans, and that was the general impression I had. There is, certainly, no comparable group to the inane morons in the US who blather on about the pooooor illegals. That group of empty headed blatherers is strictly found in the US.
What total nonsense. A whole bunch of skill-free people who want to be on the dole, and cannot speak the local language do not add. On the other hand, what they do impact is groups like Golden Dawn. You are going to see a whole buncha more anti-immigrant parties in almost every European country. It’s happening now in Denmark and Hungary. It will be happening in most other countries soon. European countries have high unemployment and correctly view the influx of a bunch of new street sweepers and trinket sellers and beggars with absolute revulsion. Locals who cannot get jobs do not want more to compete with them for jobs. And the economic arguments about more immigrants are mostly false and done with poor reasoning. Another impact of illegals - high rent. You get a bunch of illegals in, and rents go up, up, up. This has been shown in papers, BTW.
Agree with you, but all eventual changes you may want to make in your life must be made legally. So if you enter a Country with the intent of remaining in that Country and that action breaks the law, then you are an illegal alien.
No, illegal is not a slur.
Its all fine and dandy until your whole “basic, obvious, economics” come crashing down due to saturation. You can’t grow forever, the land mass of the Countries these immigrants try to enter isn’t expanding. But if your “basic, obvious, economics” really worked the way you dream, why is it that the Countries where these emigrants are coming from aren’t booming? They have more “people = more workers = more consumers = bigger economy” don’t they?
I see little evidence that “population saturation” is an issue. Overall, as access to birth control improves, family size reduce to around 2 children per household. The best way, therefore to increase population in first world countries is immigration. Eventually, if immigration was open world wide, and access to birth control was made available world wide, global population growth will slow.
