That Trump wouldn’t incite the rural white male goobers who voted him in in '14 against him.
He’s toast, regardless. He’s in the Seat of Doom. North Carolina cannot seem to bear having two reelected senators at a time. Hasn’t happened since 1972. Used to be the seat Burr holds, but after Jesse Helms finally went to his warm reward, Burr became the “Senator who gets reelected” and everyone who held Jesse’s old seat gets dumped.
Thom Tillis may think that he’s pulling his fat out of the fire for 2020 reelection, ie., forestalling primary challengers. This assumes that Trump will have the same political potency then as he has now, which is possible. But I think that it’s more likely that the Dem nominee for that Senate seat will successfully feature the Tillis weasel-move as the main theme in an ad campaign and stump speeches.
Pitiful loser. This is an important show-vote, but it really is just a show-vote. The declaration is going to grind through the courts forever. No policy goal will be achieved by selling your soul, but here he goes.
Translation: “I have principles and values, just not strong ones, and they are subject to change, quickly. Also, I scare easy. I think that’s why people vote for me again.”
Collin’s Kavanaugh vote still reverberates here in Maine. I don’t think she will fold on this one, as she is still clinging to the hope that she can pull herself out of the shitshow she’s landed herself in.
I don’t think it’s going to work, but Collins seems to…
Tillis won in '14 because the Kochs dropped a ton of money in the summer running that strange ad where an actress portraying a “Concerned Mom” spouted a bunch of really meaningless but conservative-sounding platitudes about health care while some concerned music played. They ground Kay Hagan’s very decent numbers down just by somehow associating her by implication with the ACA and the massive right wing disinformation campaign about it. She made the critical mistake of ignoring it, consistent with the consultant CW that she had to save her money for closer to the general and stayed silent while they were running.
It was very frustrating because I sensed she was fucking up by the numbers by staying dark instead of using the ads to raise money and getting her face out in real time with a message taking them on directly, but that’s the kind of thing only a very few Democratic campaign consultants would have deemed prudent for a candidate running a steady three points ahead.
If Hagan had won that election, she might very well have been running for president now.
Amazing that a person as cowardly as Trump would so often reveal the cowardice in other people. I don’t give him much credit for talent but that’s among his few abilities. He smells it like a dog, while having none of his own.
