Discussion: Third Dem Senator Announces He Will Vote Yes On Gorsuch For SCOTUS

All three of these Senators are up for reelection in 2018. Usually, I send support the way of my own state’s Democratic candidates but, in 2018, I believe I’ll be looking to support any opponent to these three (and if Heidi Heitkamp decides instead to run for governor as she is rumored to be desirous of, I’ll be supporting whoever her opponent is in that race).

With all due respect and apologies, I’d honestly rather see these seats filled with moderate Republicans than with so-called Democrats we can’t ever seem to count on when the chips are down.

This sucks. I understand why Donnelly and Manchin and Heitkamp are doing it – they want to get reelected – but the net effect of their votes is to give McConnell cover for the nuclear option. It’s time to fall on your sword, guys.

You’re most likely are gonna get your wish. Which will put the Dems so far behind in terms of sheer numbers, getting back the Senate will be VERY difficult. But if you don’t care about that, then I guess you’ll be happy in 2018.

Here's the 7 Dems who haven't said how they'll vote on Gorsuch yet. pic.twitter.com/a4SXHMTlaR

Of this list, I doubt that many more will turn. Tester might have to as MT is very conservative.

He’s in

“But as Senator, I can only vote on the nominee that comes to the Senate floor,” he said.

So vote no. You might lose your relection bid in 2018. But then again, you might not and a lot of otherwise pissed off Democrats will not abandon you. If you vote “yes”. Those same pissed off Dems will cut you loose, and the Pubbies won’t care about your “yes” vote, and vote for their special kind of yummy anyway. Either way, I’d rather see you get elected rather than not, but this isn’t about blue dogs, it’s about integrity.

As long as there are enough Dem Senators to sustain a filibuster, I personally don’t mind if a few go off the reservation to preserve their opportunity for reelection.

I would like to see Dems force McConnell to use the nuclear option.

What seedoubleyou assumes will happen is that a moderate Rethug will get in when, in fact, there are very few of them left. Very few. So, the GOP ends up with a political party that’s much more like a cult than anything else. And then people like that wonder why the Dems can’t retake the Senate.

I completely disagree. Taking a purity line in those states doesn’t make sense at this juncture. And even if it did, what makes you think any Republicans replacing them would be “moderate” anyway?

Disgusting ! Just one more Democratic coward afraid to stand up to the GOP bullies!
If he can’t stand together with the Democratic Senators, then he should go!

This is the state (mine) that teapartied long respected Senator Lugar. The candidate the GOP picked over Lugar was quite the gem: Richard Murdock - of women can’t get pregnant from rape - so no rape exception is needed in abortion bans fame. Oh - and Pence was our Governor.

Before the great gerrymandering - we got rightwing nut jobs at local levels and even some congressional districts (think Dan Burton), but they didn’t fare well in state wide elections. Since the inception of the Teaparty wing of the GOP - it’s been a steep hard right turn.

Of course he’s in. The only question is if it will require the Republicans nuking the filibuster.

They wouldn’t here, in Indiana in 2018.

I honestly don’t believe that Dems can recapture the midwest. Demographically speaking, the Rethugs have gone too far Right and whatever Dems are left have also shifted Right. So I don’t see a good strategy in letting the few Senate Dems we have get sent to pasture. Because that’s all the Dems we’ll see for some time, if ever.

Bert the Turtle is going to go nuclear sooner or later… so it might as well be over Gorsuch.

All this hand-wringing from beltway insiders over this is just so much of the same bullshit as always. Republicans have no interest in institutions or traditions and are rewarded by the beltway punditry for their behavior; likewise, Democrats are expected to be supine in the face of this because: reasons.

Fear of being primaried is how the GOP has enforced discipline – and Democrats simply don’t have that same fear of the base: yet.
