Discussion: Theresa May Wins Confidence Vote To Remain British PM

Well I guess it’s weirdly comforting to know we don’t have the only broken political system. (Not really.)

It’s a bit like the Captain of the Titanic fighting off a mutiny 30 mins after hitting the iceberg.

Congratulations Theresa May, you are stuck with the job.

I think it’s sort of like finding out that Jeb! won the 2016 primary.

Not somebody I support, but at least moderately serious and competent compared to the alternative.

117 no votes is a lot. 37% of the Tory ‘caucus’. I’ve a high regard for May’s political skills, but these last few days have been a dumpster fire for her. She blinked on her Brexit bill and now has lost leverage among the Tories. Not really sure where things go from here.

If you have not seen this it is brilliant…
Andy Serkis as Theresa May channels Gollum…

You mean that isn’t really Theresa May? I don’t believe it.

I wonder if she is happy about that…

Seems to me that the Brits now know a whole lot more about the implications of BREXIT than they did when the referendum was conducted in June, 2016. At that time the margin was 51.9% vs 48.1% to leave the EU.

With all that has been learned since that time, UK leadership might be well-advised to conduct another referendum to confirm the wishes of the UK citizens before finalizing what increasingly appears to be a terrible deal for the UK.

Just a thought.

There was also Russian meddling in favor of Brexit which may have thrown the referendum.

Just another thought.

That would be like Dumpster asking for a national referendum on his Yuge Tax Bill

What I don’t understand is that a majority in the UK would likely support withdrawing the Article 50 notice and calling off the Brexit, and pretty much any economist would say without reservation that any form of Brexit - hard, soft, or semi-squishy - will be a disaster for the UK, yet there does not seem to be a single politician of national stature who is willing to push hard to remain, or at least have another referendum now that the options have solidified. The challenge to May seems to have been from the hard Brexit crowd, not from Remainers.

Think Dumpsty and the Rethuglican party. They dont WANT to listen to the majority of the American people, the answers they got might ruin their plans,

They really should have waited til the season finale of Stupid Watergate to air The Brexit Show so that we could follow all the developments.

This is the best analysis of Brexit I’ve read so far.

It’s hard to make that argument if many in your party were pro-Brexit, because the argument you end up having to make is “all y’all shit-kicking dumbass rubes got fleeced by believing they could give you a pony, that just 'cause you’re English you deserve a pony”

But sounding all British-like.

I’m of two minds. First, She should be happy…she clearly had a higher percentage of votes than Paul Ryan was pulling within his own caucus. Second, I am still scratching my head over the threat to “Nancy” from 16 deep back benchers.

Remainers in the Labour Party also wanted a vote of no confidence.
