Discussion: There Is No White Knight Who Can Save The Republican Convention Now

Willard: They told me that you had gone totally insane, and that your methods were unsound.
Kurtz: Are my methods unsound?
Willard: I don’t see any method at all, sir.
Kurtz: I expected someone like you. What did you expect? Are you an assassin?
Willard: I’m a soldier.
Kurtz: You’re neither. You’re an errand boy, sent by grocery clerks, to collect a bill.

It’s really sad to watch the Kasich surrogates argue their man’s case. Essentially, they say that even though Kasich will have but a handful of delegates going into the Convention, he is the most qualified candidate, with the best chance to beat Hillary Clinton. And so, they argue, the Convention should turn into a coronation, all the voters who took the time to go to the polls be damned. Of course, the GOP has always been expert at screwing voters. But up until now, those voters have been Democrats.

But by the same token-- if Trump goes into the convention with a lead over Cruz in delegates, how does the party justify denying the nomination to Trump? 2nd place is 2nd place, not 1st.

The party will destroy itself in the following fight.

And I’ll be getting fat eating a massive pile of popcorn.

And they’re right. That’s why he’s staying in. If you’re going to deny the crown to the 1st Place, there’s absolutely no reason not to give it to 3rd place instead of 2nd-- since they would have already decided to pick one loser or another.

Fine with me. I’m not a registered Republican, or someone who voted for Trump or Cruz. Let the GOP deal with the fallout.

I believe the GOP leaders have already made the decision that the Presidency is lost and they’re going to pour billions into Senate races to keep their stooges in power.

While I’m sure the Cleveland convention will be fascinating in a perverse way, I’m more curious how quickly everyone involved will reflexively focus on being anti-Hillary as the one common thread they all share.

"He needs to go pick out one of his own little darling children to sacrifice to the God of cheap labor instead of living behind security walls and allowing other people’s kids to get chosen,"Dan Golvach, whose son Spencer was killed by an immigrant who was illegally in the country, was quoted as saying in the Breitbart piece.

OK that particular grieving father is forgiven for being a Republican while speaking of sacrificing other people’s children to the God of cheap labor from behind a security wall. Every other person needs to direct their well justified outrage towards American business owners and their illegal hiring practices.

Republicans represent the businessmen.

Yes but,

The Oligarch Political Party loves this!

This is the perfect chance for the Republican Oligarch Party (The so called Tea Party which is front for the Koch Oligarch Party) to hand pick their puppet at the Convention.

The Koch’s and the Republican Billionaire establishment (including Mittens) love this unfolding situation. They would have preferred that their little puppet Marco prevailed in the Primary but they’ll be just fine with hand picking another surrogate in Cleveland.

Aside from know the Koch’s will get their man, the real question is will Cleveland need to call out the National Guard as it will finally become clear to any and al none Billionaires that their political party has been a fraud all along…it’s the party of the Oligarchs.

Fred Malek, a prominent businessman and Republican fundraiser, admitted there is recognition and fear that putting up an alternate this late in the game could alienate the base (although he still holds out hope that Kasich could make a play at a contested convention.)

That would be the Fred Malek who worked for the Nixon Administration. He advised Bob Haldeman that someone needed to take the lead in politicizing bureaus and agencies in the administration, but recognizing the potential dangers of leaks, advised Haldeman that any further instructions on such a move be done verbally.

Also served as a finance chair for the McCain campaign. THESE are the kinds of folks considered the Republican “establishment.” You get to choose between them and Trump and Cruz. Hobson’s choice indeed.

House Speaker Paul Ryan (who got dragged into his current job) Me thinks the lady protest too much or man whatever. I think people are underestimating Ryan’s manipulations.

I think he is as dangerous for the country as T.Rump and Cruz and is certainly more intelligent and manipulative than T.Rump and uses his pulpit in Congress as thoroughly as does Cruz use the voices in his head. What is even more scary is the potential damage of a tampering of policies is Mr. Ryan decides to “take Mr. Trump under his wing” to “help him be more presidential”

Why has no one learned from the disaster of underestimating Trump, and continues to discount the underhandedness of the politicians who are hell bent on power and money rather than governing? Our Congress is littered with little dictators who are only held in check by our constitution for now, but they will chip away until we have no more freedom other than go to the early or late service on Sunday.

My Preference for a White Knight would be Jay Rockefeller. Of course, he is far too reasonable to be considered electable…

What isn’t clear to me is the process for resolving who the Republican candidate for President will be. It seems unlikely that Trump, after declaring his superhuman negotiating skills as one of his primary assets for becoming President would somehow take some offer to defer to Cruz. How would that work? “I made a great deal. Instead of President, I’m going to be Secretary of Labor?” And Cruz, hard to see him accepting the Vice-Presidency and having to explain every Trump faux pas. Everyone says there will be a brokered convention…I don’t see it, not yet. No one has anything to offer the other.

The only error I found in this article is that there is a battle for the soul of the republican party. They long, log ago sold their soul if they ever had one.
