These people believe so much in America that they are willing to put their lives on the line, and the Trump administration wants to reject them because they aren’t US citizens? And, to be honest, because they are likely not the “right” kind of people (i.e. not white). First of all, it’s blindingly stupid to turn your back on someone who is that willing to contribute to our society…they want to be here, they add to us as a nation, and that’s who we want here. Second, there’s the racism…no other way to put it, it’s just racist to look at some guy from Pakistan and throw him out because of the nation he’s from.
Most worryingly, there’s the attitude behind this…“US Citizens only”. Hell, we wouldn’t have a nation if we had followed that idea, and America has always been a nation of immigrants. People come here because they believe in the ideals we stand for, even if we fall short of them sometimes. Things like this will make the world believe that it’s all been a lie, that we’re a nation for white power only, with brown people subservient (something we actively were for far too long). It’s not a far step to go from “US Citizens” to “US Patriots”, with Patriots defined by some group that only wants the “right” Americans in the military…heck, we’re too close to that already, with how much our military is dominated by Christian conservatives. Crossing that line leads to a military that is just fine killing citizens that aren’t as “good as us”.
There’s lots of big things the Trump administration is doing that are awful, but the little things like this are what really worry me…it shows that the leadership is completely fine turning us into the worst nation on Earth, and thinks their actions are great.

Interesting that the take for both the real comments and the fakes is overt racism and white nationalism. And it’s been this way for a while. But I think they’re overplaying their hand. It’s got to be turning a lot of people off.

Any faith I ever had in the essential goodness of the American people is gone, gone, gone.
Americans were never “essentially” good. 65% and up supported the Iraq War in this country. That should’ve given you a clue a long time ago.
But if you’ve been buying the American exceptionalist bullshit despite all evidence to the contrary up until now, well then I can see why you’re in despair. But the truth is, there’s not a country on earth that isn’t riddled with assholes, and that hasn’t been run by those assholes from time to time. And the U.S. isn’t, and never was, any different.
This doesn’t, however, negate the existence of people of good will too – nor the existence of others of not quite ill will. And some of them are perhaps learning that it’s a mistake not to vote, or to vote third party for the hell of it, or to spin the wheel and vote for a maggot like Trump just “for a change.”
I think there are more than a few people of not quite ill will out there who are coming to be ashamed of having voted for Trump. And I can only hope the frothing rabid racism of his true believers will continue to cause shame in more and more of them.

This is just an awful story, very sad to hear. They seem like really decent people who really want to be here and serve this country and make it a better place. How in the hell can we do this to them? We are a country of immigrants for god’s sake…
