Discussion for article #229354
The news media in the United States have failed miserably. Sensationalism, infotainment and little else. Even more “in-depth” outlets like NPR continually fall back upon a line of reporting that touts the needs of their corporate sponsors.
NPR has grown far shallower over the last fifteen years. In depth reports are few anymore.
Our short attention span makes it possible for those in power to just wait out any protest against their misuse of power. We have extended our attention span about as far as possible where Ferguson is involved, so those in power will once again win. If this was a conventional war, the daily body counts, returning coffins of the dead, and returning walking wounded would enable us to continue our attention. But, there is nothing happening in Ferguson that substitutes for that.
When the Martin Luther King, Jr. led actions against segregation occurred, Rev. King made sure there were always events and happenings that kept out attention focused. That is lacking today.
