As I recall, conservatives pointed to a survey that showed the majority of journalists favoring a “less government” interpretation of the First Amendment – freedom of the press.
Well, duh. Gun enthusiasts are liberal about the Second Amendment.
Therefore, said conservative propagandists, journalists were liberal, and the mainstream media was liberal.
They went a step further in claiming the only way to correct a media landscape that tilted toward disciplined objectivity in the presentation of news, was to launch a news service that had complete right-wing bias all the time.
In the 60s, media standards defined a deliberate process to be objective. The conservative movement morphed that into a freedom to be duped by lies, if one so wishes.
I have no doubt that E-Verify is flawed… but are you saying it could not be fixed? The Social Security Administration should be the source of reference… granted that when an someone uses another’s social security administration, they just gladly accept the money, but they KNOW it’s not coming from the real owner… it never gets posted to the owner’s account, it just goes into the system… just the way the feds like it. In some ways, government contributes to the problem it is most definitely NOT the problem and in this case provides the only hope for a solution. (just my opinion)
Oh certainly E-Verify could be fixed if they were serious about it. And cheating will still happen, just like Medicare fraud does. Getting it mostly accurate and having a way to maintain, fix and measure results linked with other benefits would be possible. I am saying some conservatives and businesses don’t want it fixed so they can keep that shadow tax remittance maybe, but more importantly to them keep “illegal” workers here but in fear so they work for cheap and take whatever abuse we inflict.
Knowing we got it mostly right and fair would be better than the current situation. Strict enforcement but with more generous immigration policies. Keeping things sketchy serves their purposes and gets cheap workers that don’t speak up when abused. If it was all above board with a real guest worker program that would mostly go away, they might have to pay people more and at least get a real handle on what is going on so we can discuss it, instead of hate filled rumors and innuendo which only serves people that take advantage of others.
That greed ALSO keeps us from tracking repeat criminals that cross over, which is the real hypocrisy and danger here. If treating most of people with respect and dignity means we can round up any bad actors, and people feel they can report bad actors to keep their community reputation up, everybody wins.
Yes… we are in agreement. The issue is certainly greed and it’s primarily from the corporate types. They use the fact that some small contractors circumvent the law to pocket 1000’s to circumvent the law on the corporate scale to pocket 1000000’s
