Discussion: The Red Cross CEO Has Been Serially Misleading About Where Donors' Dollars Are Going

Discussion for article #230818

My parents and their friends, all of the greatest generation era, despise the Red Cross and have not and will not donate to them. After listening to their stories, I decided I would never contribute to them, either.

This is nothing new with the Red Cross. I don’t give them a dime of my charitable contributions. I prefer Doctors without Borders and Partners in Health who really do give their time and all their money to help people. The Red Cross is basically a sham

Indeed. I can remember my mother complaining when I was a child about how the Red Cross operated, a complaint that went back to how they delivered care packages to GIs during WWII, taking donated items and items bought with donated funds and selling them to the servicemen for cash.

They don’t get my money, and they don’t get my blood.

I have never give to these guys; there are plenty of other worthy causes;

It is a very complex conglomerate organization

  • the blood banking business - is just that - ā€˜a business’ and a high margin one
  • the safety training unit is also ā€˜a business’ - but quite different from the medical -product like blood banking .
  • the donation side’s operational process seems to be obscured and difficult to truly measure.

Yes - have heard similar comments from men who served in WWII - they had a really jaded view of the Red Cross - sometimes adding in Anglo-Saxon descriptors to enhance their description/opinion of the organization.

My wife and I donate by automatic monthly charges to our credit card to Catholic Relief Services and Doctors without Borders, both of which are graded ā€œAā€ By Charity Watch. I don’t know for sure, but I think we give a higher portion of our income to international aid and relief than do the Koch brothers, though we are both just teachers.
