Discussion for article #231625
There must be a more imaginative way to get the message across. The comparison with the lunch counter sit-ins makes me think of the old Marx quote to the effect that history repeats, the first time as tragedy, the second as farce.
The John Cardillo tweet – a photo of himself pointing a gun over a peaceful event – confirms the need for continuing protests.
I’ll give you my eggs benedict when you pry them from my cold, dead hands!
This reminds me of a nicer version of Act Up actions in the early 80s and properly so as social media eventually ensures the wider audience old media once and still censors…But, as the gun image sadly illustrates, even peaceful assemblies in this digital age of unregulated commercially amped polarization could turn deadly. And, with another early, endless, pointless political season dawning and the political crows cawing the same old saw from the town dumps (cable) God only knows where people’s frustrations and commercially amped media will take us…
I’d probably express solidarity and all, but this “tactic” doesn’t strike me as all that effective. This isn’t a lunch counter sit-in, this is just acting like an ass to make sure your words get attention. I’m pretty sure the difference isn’t a subtle one.
I also take umbrage with the implication that “brunch” or going out to eat for a nice breakfast is an elitist white privilege. It’s silly enough that it somewhat undermines the message.
Seriously…what a disturbed and insecure fuck (as evidenced by the NRA regalia in the background). I love eggs benedict (particularly with crab cakes!)…and NOBODY better touch mine…but a 9mm over some poached eggs and hollandaise? Two words: mental illness.
Ahem. Second paragraph of your post requires edits.
That gun ain’t gonna save him from his arteriosclerosis.
As amusing as that is, we’d be a bit miffed by anyone running around yelling about what black people like and crossing the fried chicken and waffles, watermelon and grape drank line in the sand.
I don’t see anything in the article or the pictures that confirm these restaurants were catering only to white people or that they were “boozy”.
stupid & petty
voting would probably be more effective
Really? This just proves that there is no intelligence behind the anti=brutality movement. Were these brunch spots where white cops hang out particularly or is this just to piss people off and divide the races even further?
This kind of thing is dumb. First of all, none of the restaurants involved, nor any of the patrons as far as I know, had anything to do with the deaths of Michael Brown or Eric Garner. Did any of the people in the restaurants support the grand jury verdicts or the actions of the police? Or the recent protests by the NYPD against Mayor Bill DeBlasio? We have no way of knowing. Without some culpability, there is no reason to intrude on private property and private events. Put it this way, if protesters–however well-intentioned–invaded your wedding, or anniversary party, or bar mitzvah, how would you feel? So, this kind of thing does more harm than good to the cause for which the protesters work. Like I said, dumb.
Why just a couple of weeks ago, my friend Andre, who’s African-Jamaican-American went out for brunch. And that’s not the first time we’ve done so.
Oh, yeah.
This is totally different. This is not about the rights of all persons to get served (lunch-counter protests). This is about the “rights” of these morons to deprive me of the brunch. I paid for the brunch, and they are stealing the right to enjoy that brunch from me. This will have one effect: pissing off possible supporters. Lucky I was not there.
Absolutely right. What is the “right” that these idiots have to disrupt and STEAL from me the opportunity to enjoy this brunch? If I am there with my wife, we are probably paying $50 for this meal, and these morons come along and DEMAND that I agree with them. Well, I don’t agree with them, and every additional loser idea that comes up makes me less sympathetic.
Seems like a fairly indiscriminate way to get attention.
I disagree with the commenters who argue that the protests are pointless and counter-productive.
Isn’t disruption part of the point? Those of us lucky enough to be born white (and probably educated - we’re reading TPM) in the USA are privileged. Brunch is something of a metaphor for that privilege.
These apparently non-violent protests just ask those of us who are white (and, sure, anyone else not-white who happen to be also enjoying their middle/upper-middle class existence and brunch) to pay attention for a moment, to the plight of those society has left behind.
I have no idea if the protesters did more than disrupt. Suggested solutions would be nice - but becoming aware that short a solution, our easy lives will be disrupted is not a bad starting place.
