Discussion for article #240940
Once the Republican platform, always the Republican platform:
- Every man for himself.
- Every woman for your husband.
Republican conservatives to continue their war on Christmas by planning to hold the holy day hostage in exchange for their political ends. Real family-values types, those elected representatives.
So, what you’re saying is the terrorists could still win?
Did the Democrats learn the ACORN lesson? We’ll see.
Short answer–Nope.
Don’t negotiate with hostage takers —
TPM:
Cruz and two of the other GOP presidential candidates in the Senate have argued, against historical evidence, that Democrats would be blamed for a government shutdown.
Part of me wishes someone would sit these guys down and explain to them that: Americans, for better or worse, inaccurately see the GOP as the party of small gov’t. Americans also see shutting down the gov’t as the epitome of small gov’t. So shutting down the gov’t will always be seen as the Republicans getting what they want, and, consequently, as their fault.
The other part of me just wishes they were doing this in 2016 instead.
My prediction: No shutdown now, but bigger and badder mess in a few months when it comes time to raise the debt ceiling.
Have you noticed that this is not the central story on the TV machine. Apparently few outside Washington believe the Congress is actually going to shutdown over Planned Parenthood. If it does the shock will damage Republican chances in the next election.
John Boehner, devout Catholic?
- devoted to divine worship or service; pious; religious
- expressing devotion or piety
- earnest or sincere; hearty
- state of being orange and loaded
What was this ACORN lesson? And does it only exist in the (tiny) minds of the religious nuts!
No Negotiating with hostage takers.Never surrender to these conservative slimeballs.
We’re going to be lurching like this until the last day of Obama’s presidency, aren’t we?
Frankly, I’ve not seen a scintilla of evidence that Democrats have any interest in backing away from this fight. In fact, it’s just the opposite, and every person in Democratic leadership has given their unabashed support to PP and continuing federal funding. PP isn’t Acorn, PP is a well-known, well-respected organization that has the approval of nearly 3/4 of the American people. The only question for Democrats appears to be whether they bail Boehner out at current spending levels (meaning no cuts to PP’s funding) for a continuing resolution or they hold off for a shutdown they can hang around the necks of the GOP. That’s it.
I don’t think so. I think they’ll come up with a compromise to raise the debt ceiling and maintain current spending levels that will extend until the lame duck session after next year’s election. Then, while the losing party is licking it’s wounds and everyone is saying goodbye to ousted and retiring members, they’ll come up with a short term continuing resolution that maintains spending until March or April of 2017.
The most likely eventual outcome of this will only be a short term CR. So you may very well get your wish.
Ok…here is what has changed in this situation from the previous plans McConnell and Boehner have hatched.
This time they are going to wish REALLY hard that the House crazies go along with them, and don’t force a shutdown.
That’s it.
Expect a shutdown. Jimney Cricket was a cartoon character, and there just aren’t that many new stars out there to wish on.
Almost right. They will come up with a compromise that will maintain domestic spending levels but raise spending for the Pentagon.
The 2013 shutdown hurt Republicans’ approval ratings in the short term, but voters evidently forgot about it by the following year’s midterm elections, because they stayed home in droves and let the Republicans win the Senate and add to their majority in the House.
