Discussion: The Five Biggest Moments Of The First Presidential Debate

Here are the 5 biggest moments:

  1. Trump doing coke before the debate
  2. Trump forgetting his Xanax and teleprompter
  3. Trump admitting he pays no taxes
  4. Trump was incoherent
  5. Trump didn’t deny housing discrimination, he was just as bad as other companies.
Bonus 1: It is good business to stiff contractors
Bonus 2: The Split Screen killed Trump

Just remember that the vote wasn’t tonight. Now we need to keep applying the pressure and bait. Write your newspapers and teevee stations and remind them how presidential Hillary was and how presidential trump is NOT.

I just skimmed the NYT article, “How Clinton went from tentative to scorching”.
The writers were about as nasty as possible to Clinton, but still had to admit she killed it.

Thank you for this. I keep reminding myself that in 2012 President Obama did terribly in the first debate. Of course, in the next two outings he came back and knocked it out of the park. It’s not over 'til it’s over. This is not the time to get smug or complacent!

Trump is not Obama. He will not be coming back. He’s lost the white suburban women’s vote for good tonight.

As always, Trump insults instead of formulates real policy that he can talk about. He’s all hot air and bluster. Everyone has a cousin or brother-in-law who tries to con his way through life. Tonight Trump identified himself as that relative.

You just want him to go away. You’ve already given him way too many chances to prove he’s not a jerk. He’s never been able to do it. No way, no how, no more or this fraud of a human being.

That’s about right. Women/minorities kill it all the time now. But there always has to be something wrong with how they do it. We are used to the drill. But it doesn’t matter any longer. The only opinion that is important is that of the voter on election day.

President Obama proved that twice. Hillary will, too.

Our growing economic recovery is way too fragile to risk on someone who doesn’t take anything serious.

Our troops are too precious to be left in the hands of a someone who doesn’t have a firm grasp of what they are doing or the sacrifice it requires.

Our republic is too important to be threatened by a fascist demagogue.

The Trump brand is all marketing but junk product. And nobody can afford it.

I agree with @squaker30. Trump would have been more effective if he had laid off the cocaine sniff sniff.

My favorite moments were when Donald leaned ever so close to the microphone — master of the medium that he is — and exaggeratedly drolled out Wrrrroonngggggaaaa.

Very presidential.

I’m not certain Trump understands what the word temperament means.

BTW. Kudos to Lester Holt.

Early on, Trump calculated that he might survive the night by bullying and interrupting and evading. Holy did a very good job of tempering Trump’s childish and amateurish defensive compulsiveness.

After watching this all I can say is that Trump is a lot like his hair: Sparse, off-color, lacking depth but capable of contorting into any position depending on which way the wind blows.

Morning Joe has started the counteroffensive this morning. Meeka is opining that Trump won the debate, ala Sugar Ray Leonard, Joe is diminishing it’s significance and the rest of the panel seems to be saying that Hillary won but it all depends on what the pundits are saying over the next few days.
I don’t know what debate they watched but Trump did not win the one that played on my TV!

Oh F*ck Off GMA!

“winning over the audience” my ass (the hooting and hollering over releasing her emails)

Trump didn’t smile much and it’s not very attractive.

Metaphor:

Clinton as bullfighter. Kept on sticking the snorting beast and pivoting away from his angry, stupid charges.

Controlled the arena.

Don’t know about that. Lester seemed unable to rein HO in when he got off on one of his rants. OTOH, that was a good thing, because Madame Secretary was able to keep that cool, amused, slightly unbelieving look on her face. (It reminded me of the SNL debate Skit where ?? Dukakis ?? Said, “I’m losing to this guy?”

Forget Palin’s wink. that shimmy won it for me.

HRC’s missed opportunity: pressing HO on a sample of the regulations he would eliminate, or asking him about say food safety regs. And when he talked about forbidding companies from leaving, throwing his own words - “that’s business” - back at him. The go on to amend with “when it’s operated for the shareholders and no one else”.

But my postmortem doesn’t count as much as the way she chopped him up as a carcass fit for the dogs.

Yeah, that’s it ! I can hear Reince Priebus: "You should smile more, Donald ! We all like a pretty smile from a good boy "

And yet as I watch the morning shows they are all claiming Trump did well. I feel like HRC is the kid who gets the perfect score on her SAT and the punditry are the guidance counselors who are asking why she wasn’t chosen as homecoming queen. I watched the debate. Twice. She knocked it out of the park and it needs to be acknowledged.
