My guess is that she does think that liberals have their own tribalism that some would say is “irrational.” I base that on the fact that she says so pretty explicitly. I also think that she would say that such irrationalism does not run as deep as preferring a family that would protect a child molester over someone like the current president, because that is what the rest of her column is about.

Liberals have their own versions of these societal ills, of course. Just with fewer guns and superstitions.
I don’t really know who the Duggars are, and it seems useless to compare their favorability ratings with Obama’s.
I also don’t know what a Tinder date is, and currently work with faculty members at Berkeley who seem utterly inept.
I will say, however, that the current mindset of the electorate on the right has gone ONE STEP BEYOND. They seem to lack ideas on how to govern, and are instead seizing upon angers and resentments to draw themselves together and create political momentum. It may just be growing pains as the US finally moves toward a more intelligent position regarding itself and its place in the world–that’s what I’m hoping. But it sure is scary.

Are you kidding me, if it doesn’t fit their agenda no matter how many facts or science support an issue, whether its climate change, or the world is round they will deny with unfortunately a very large megaphone.

I’ve known a few irrational liberals, and they certainly do exist. However, I’d argue that at least in how my experiences have been and from what I’ve seen in media and in politics is that there tends to be a quick rejection of these types by more “mainstream” liberals that you don’t see much of from the right when it comes to their fringier adherents. A defining trait of liberalism is that it’s an ideology based on logical explorations of any given issue where outdated or irrelevant information is easily rejected for better ideas, and far less driven by dogma the way conservatism is. We’ve got no qualms telling the loons to f—k off, and crazy people don’t last too long in liberal circles or are quickly corrected. In conservative circles they get a microphone and a book deal.

Good article. Makes you wonder about the longterm impact of the Epistemic Closure bubble. Think about what we have seen over the past 25 years. First with right wing talk radio, and now with the right wing digital industrial complex. Personally, I am concerned with the future and nature of American democracy. As this “self-select reality” trend continues to metastasize in our political discourse, the ability of people to work on common solutions will be limited not only by philosophical agreements, but increasingly by the barrier of acknowledging objective reality. These closure bubbles will eventually lead us off a cliff.

So, you are a conservative? Your opinion is very dogmatic.
Really? Because the last time I checked a handful of right-leaning commenting boards after Charleston, commenters were literally nothing but vicious racists, incoherent, and anger-laden. They were far removed from anything even remotely resembling redemptive, forgiving or kind.

The reason they always back them is because…well, remember a nice summer afternoon when your neighbor comes home from work and you ask him if he wants a beer and you both are sitting around watching the sun dip to the horizon and enjoying life when that asshole from a couple of houses down with the weird wife comes over and starts bending your ear about something you don’t give a fuck about and you just wish he would go away so you could drink your beer in peace?
That’s the kinda guy who loves the Duggars and Duck Dynasty. He’s ALWAYS there.
