Discussion: The Disturbing Subtext Of The GOP Opposition To The Iran Deal

I’ve never understood what sort of threat Iran is supposed to present to us. Last time I looked at a map, Iran was pretty far from the U.S. mainland.

As bombing a country doesn’t generally put them in a talking mood…

In fact, studies conducted after the Vietnam war establish pretty clearly that bombing strengthens a population’s resolve to resist ever more fiercely.

Netanyahu and his US War Party allies would have opposed any deal, no matter the terms. And that’s because for them, it is now nor ever been about Iran’s nuclear program. This is about war on Iran. Their Iraq adventure was about war on Iran . As in the case of Iraq, harsh economic sanctions are a necessary precondition of attack. The nuclear program is just a pretext and the world has called the bluff.

Remember their battle cry. “Anyone can go to Baghdad. Real men go to Tehran.”

Lindsey does not read anything before he offers an opinion because the facts only confuse him. He is like the potential juror who tells the lawyer during the weeding-out-bad-juror process that he knows the defendant to be guilty “because they always are.”

I watched the network news coverage of John Boehner and his mob of GOP nay-sayers lined up to employ the camera and microphone in the hallways of the Capitol building. This “spelling bee” line up to get their negative quote on the home TV channels is stupid, not worthy of any government entity and “we the people” shouldn’t have to send our tax money so these demagogues can propagate their lies and propaganda. This is political use of a public facility and just like mis-use of the “franking privilege” should be curtailed when not used in accordance with the law.

When all else fails, follow the money, and focus short-term, as is always the case with Congress. Here, the lack of turmoil in the Mid-east suggests oil prices will fall as Iran can once again sell on the global markets. The petro-oligarchs will not be pleased. The lack of new turmoil (we have plenty already existing) in the middle east will make it harder for weapons merchants and other members of the MIC to continue to siphon up public revenues. These interests play a large role in Washington.

And let’s face it…there is a portion of Congress that ALWAYS believes the answer to any overseas challenges is to spend more money on defense. Diplomacy is for pussies. Never will they ever ask the question, “Just how much money do we have to spend to be truly safe?” For them the answer is always, spend more and we will be safer.

Actually we have done that…unfortunately, it is easy to argue that it hasn’t achieved the desired results.

Obama has tried hard to shift to a greater emphasis on diplomacy, but that never will deter the hawks.

I guess you didn’t realize that Israel is the ACTUAL capital of the US, according to politicians who depend of AIPAC for their bling.

No it won’t. All you need is some appearances before Congress by past CIA directors and a few more FBI ooga boogas about how they just barely stopped someone from blowing up the White House (after giving the poor mentally ill bastard the dynamite, instructions and encouragement so they had the evidence to arrest him) and the public will always support more and more spending on weaponry and systems and spying.

Hey I think he should sneak into Iran and try to assassinate all these bad guys he wants to send others in to fight against.

Even the head of Mossad is in favor of this agreement. But the media only focuses on Bibi. Typical

We, as a nation, really can’t afford to let the GOP screw this deal up and I hope that enough people understand that and will be vocal in their opposition to any GOP efforts to knock it down.

I think it’s clear that the GOP wants to scratch the back of the Military Industrial Complex. The MIC funds their re-election war chests, so that the GOP can feed their coffers with war. If they have their way, we will be in perpetual war. If a GOP candidate wins the white house, we will be at war almost immediately. Mark it down.

Let’s face it, many of the critics represent interests that are opposed to giving peace a chance. Some represent the war industry that makes big money from death, others represent oil interests that don’t like the idea of Iranian oil hitting the market, driving down prices, and some represent the interests of the current Israeli government which has decided that peace with Tehran might threaten their special relationship with America.

Virtually all of America’s serious military experts believe that surgical air strikes would at best set back Iran’s program by a few years. This suggests an endless pattern where the U.S. will have to continue putting our pilots at risk.

This is exactly what the opponents want because that would create a merry-go-around of never-ending military engagement and hostility-building to continue to feed the need for endless military intervention(s). A win-win for hawk-type Republicans and their Military Industrial Complex buddies who continue to shove more and more political donations their way.

this is a very good point. KSA, in particular, feels economically threatened by a non-ostracized iran, and we usually do their bidding, but not this time; good on obama.

Actually, this deal is seen as positive for the war industry, as it is expected that the Saudis and others in the region will buy more arms against what they perceive (rightly or wrongly) as a stronger Iran. For oil, it is definitely negative, though.

FWIW, here are some analysts’ takes http://www.nasdaq.com/article/4-etfs-in-focus-as-iran-reaches-nuclear-deal-etf-news-and-commentary-cm496654

They to forget that Saint Reagan negotiated with the Iranians and cut a deal for them to remain captive until after his inauguration. He then went on to supply them with weapons and money. Seems like one more case of Republican short term amnesia.

This is the absolute truth. Iran is the lowest hanging fruit for the “death industry” to hang it’s hopes on. Learning lessons is so far from what the arms merchants and their minions are concerned about that it’s laughable. The lesson learned is that conflict is profitable for war-mongers and the warheads in congress who catapult their propaganda.

“Learning” supposes that there are morals and principals in the minds of the opposition that could be swayed with empirical evidence of past screw-ups and disasters. There are not. Many corporations and individuals have tasted the blood money of war and conflict. They are hungry. They are thirsty. They are anxious for an outlet to deplete inventories so more can be sold. Peace is an abomination to these monsters. It’s bad for business.
