Discussion for article #244970
I had the dubious honor of growing up in Whitesboro. Itâs an economically depressed former mill town in upstate New York. Everyone I knew in high school in the 70âs who had an ounce of ambition got out of town as soon as they could. That clip shows what was left behind.
Change is hard. Very, very hard.
" 'When Williams pointed out his offensive rhetoric, he told Williams, âWell, at one point, that was part of your history, being a negro, rightâ?"
âŚTo which Williams could have replied: âPart of your history too⌠being an idiot and all.â
Well, at the end of the day, Iâm glad they were able to solve racism.
Take that, Obama!
Meh, I say.
Meh.
Iâll hold off my applause until I see what they decide to change it to next. The people there seem clueless. Glad to see however they got public attention for their insulting seal and it may have made them think twice (three xâs?) about the damn thing.
Hey not dogging this episode. But does anyone watch the Daily Show since Jon Stewart left? I used to watch it every night. I have not watched the Daily Show since Stewart left. I think Stewart made a huge mistake not waiting until after the Nov 2016 elections to leave. Not criticizing the new host. But considering the Daily Showâs main comedy was politics. An American comedian would have been a better choice as host.
Pathetic that it took this report, and probably all the others, to get them to change. Especially when you see all the other previous images that looked a lot less like choking. Glad to see they are finally changing it. Hey hereâs a wild ass thought. Why not show they two shaking hands! This doesnât even seem like something that should have come to a vote. the elected officials should have just had enough sense to change it to something decent like a handshake, presented to to the people, and made it so. Theyâd have probably said ok, looks good.
Can you imagine the absolute fuclinâ shit storm if a town, that had a black majority, had some seal that showed a black guy strangling a white guy, or better yet a white women!
Holy fuckinâ shit there would be drive by shootings of black folks by white guys in pickups at night even more often than there probably are now.
I watch it. I enjoy it very much. Trevor is growing into the role nicely. Much love for Jon, but nothing lasts forever. He was getting burnt out, and I hope heâs enjoying his life now.
I agree. I think that in the last few months, Jon was just going through the motions. He was tired, and he deserves a well-earned break. I canât wait to see his next project.
She did good! I think part of the genius of those segments is that the guests do not know theyâre being mocked. So the âinterviewerâ has to be at least a little subtle. Either that or the interviewee has to be particularly dense.
Yes. The best part of these satirical interviews that Jessica conducts (like Colbert before her) is she absolutely highlights the intervieweeâs stupidity who is clueless that the joke is on him. Aasif Mandvi was another who did this well. You may recall the time he got a GOP county chairman to admit that his stateâs voter ID law was meant to keep Dems from voting.
It reminds me of Pawnee from Parks and Recreation. Except its real.
For someone who admits theyâve not watched the new incarnation, your opinion might be considered suspect.
I almost peed myself when she interviewed the guy in that photo and he said âyour raceâ and used the word ânegroâ to her face. Such a heady admixture of cringe-worthy, hilarious and strangely educational. I mean, for all my usual ranting about deliberate white supremacist racism, I have to admit that when I step back and calm down and try to be more objective about it, itâs really probably more like THAT GUY is primarily what weâre dealing with: Rural white dudes (and dudettes) in their mid-60âs who are so utterly oblivious to their racism that they would use the word ânegroâ to a black womanâs face. Make no mistake, itâs absolutely still racism, but itâs like the difference between running someone over after stepping on the gas to speed up and hit them harder versus running someone over because you were texting and not paying attention.
Reminds meâŚsaw this guy on Tosh.O haha:
Mind boggling.
Ah, those classic arguments about the perils of democracy-- that we let people like that vote is why we have problems.
I completely agree. There are ignorant malicious people and ignorant donât get it people. I think there are more donât get it people than there are malicious people. That being said, Iâve seen donât get it people turn into malicious people when confronted with their ignorance.
Wait⌠so she went there to mock and make fun of people and bully them into changing something she didnât understand and didnât agree with? In the name of fighting racism⌠that literally doesnât exist.
Could it be that people see what they want to see? There was a time when the world didnât examine everything to find something offensive in it. No one cared about the seal years ago, and they sure as hell didnât create with 2016 in mind and how PC butthurt everyone would become.
This nation used to have balls, we didnât get offended so easily, we had thick skin! Now itâs not so much about how thick it is, but what color it is. This was a friendly wrestling match and every native knew that! It didnât need to be changed until society decided it was offensive to those IGNORANT to the facts!
The guy protesting it even admitted they were friends! So then why is it offensive? If you know the history and you understand what is taking place on the seal and you DONâT take it at face value what is the problem here?
So let me get this straight, that seal had to go, it was bad⌠but itâs okay for her to march into this sleepy little town of no more than 4k residents and make a mockery out of them for laughs? Are you kidding me!?
Sir⌠your name and your avatar offend me⌠change it now!
