I wonder if the state in which he is presumably “licensed” to practice has the same rules, i.e., whether it is a violation of the state regulations on psychiatric practice to openly diagnose someone whom you have never met or professionally “seen” - most state practice laws for licensure mirror the professional ethical rules for that specific type of medical practice. If so, why hasn’t his license been yanked?
That’s not the story here.
From a 2011 letter from Tufts University:
http://president.tufts.edu/2011/09/letter-to-mass-transgender-political-coalition/
First, we would like to clarify Dr. Ablow’s affiliation with Tufts University and Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM). Dr. Ablow is not an employee of either Tufts University or Tufts University School of Medicine. He is an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry, which is a voluntary, unpaid appointment. More than 4,000 individuals hold voluntary, unpaid appointments at the school. Over the years, Dr. Ablow has given occasional lectures in forensic psychiatry to residents, who have already received the M.D. degree. …He does not teach medical students.
Furthermore, Dr. Ablow does not hold any position at Tufts Medical Center, which is a separate organization from Tufts University and Tufts University School of Medicine. We understand that Tufts Medical Center has requested that Dr. Ablow remove the reference from his website.
A September 2011 editorial in the Tufts student newspaper indicated that it had been over 5 years at that point since Ablow last gave a lecture at Tufts.
Ablow continues to milk the Tufts title and “affiliation”. Tufts removed him from the faculty directory at some point after Sept. 2011.
With all due respect, this guy is a complete asshole.
could you explain to me what respect is this guy due?
So Ablow lies about a lot of things—not just the president.
I would like to believe that because Ablow’s musings on Fox are so completely over-the-top, many of his viewers see him as entertainment of sorts. But I don’t think that’s the case; besides self-promotion, I believe that Ablow provides his viewers the ‘argument from authority’ they need to believe whatever wildly irrational shit they wish to believe about our president. It’s sort of like finding some guy with a PhD to validate crazy 9/11 truther theories or creationist/ID theories, even if the doctorate is in some field completely unrelated to the subject at hand.
Thanks. Invaluable additional information and clarification. Appreciate it!
Here is Ablow’s rebuttal:
You are giving him way too much ethical credit. He is a highly educated man who does know better - but he loves the attention, and knows what sells on the the network that employs him.
I have wondered the same thing - he has openly diagnosed many individuals he has never met or interviewed. Worse yet, he does so in a public forum. Ethical, committed psychiatrists and psychologists must be horrified that he is considered a member of their profession.
Hopkins guided Ben Carson out the door for less than this (publicly he “retired” but other physicians say it was forced). I’m surprised that Tufts hasn’t given Ablow the boot.
As a Tufts alum, I’m seriously considering trying to find a way to start a petition to get him canned. It’s fucking embarrassing for him to have any association with the school whatsoever, let alone have him teaching students there at all.
Keith Blowhole: world renowned expert in absolutely nothing.
I certainly do hope TPM uses the above-referenced letter from Tufts as the basis of a follow-up article about Ablow!
Phyllis Schlafly (I couldn’t believes she’s still alive) said, "Obama doesn’t want America to believe that we’re exceptional. He wants us to be just like everybody else, and if Africa is suffering from Ebola, we ought to join the group and be suffering from
it, too. That’s his attitude.” Now if Phyllis and Ablow keep talking like this, the rest of us colored people will start to believe that whites ain’t the superior race.
New rules before expressing any opinion about Africa, Ebola, or President Obama: If you don’t know the difference between East Africa, where Kenya is located, and where the president’s father was born, and West Africa, then you should keep your yap shut. If you operate under the illusion that Africa is a country, then keep your yap shut. And if you’re going to criticize a half-white president by attributing qualities you disdain to his black half, then get a DNA test to rule out your own potential African ancestry. With that shaved head Dr. Ablow could pass for NYT columnist Charles Blow’s brother. Check out the similarity of their surnames.
Forgive me, as Tufts alum, if I am nowhere near mollified by that fucking letter. The man is an unmitigated embarrassment and does not deserve to have the ability to tout even the remotest of connections to either the undergrad or medical schools. Fuck him, fuck him hard, and he should be told to piss off in no uncertain terms by the university. Period. There is no gray area here whatsoever. If the failure is Tufts acquiescing in his continued use of the school’s name, then I’m still pissed. They should be out in front of that and demanding he cease and desist. He’s a fucking bigot, racist pig and his career should be stomped on in every possible way.
I am ready to announce this piece of garbage a national disgrace. He is nothing of what an American is. He is vile scum, PERIOD !!!
It is trash like this that makes me walk through the cold and snow in November to make sure i vote in EVERY election to make sure garbage like him and his minions do not gain power. He should just admit his membership in the American Nazi party and come out.
they all look the same to them, amirite?
He needs a brain more.
Did he suffer a head injury? Seriously, how can a Brown grad be this stupid?
