Discussion: The Class Issues Hidden In An Explosive New Doc About Amateur Porn

managing a breastaurant

Excellent story with only about a billion potential sidebars. A shame Vonnegut didn’t live to see breastaurants.

Breastaurant ? Is that ‘Hooters’ ?

If an adult wants to make money by using their sexuality why shouldn’t they do so. The fact that they will almost certainly regret doing so later in life should be a reason for counseling/education about some of the realities of life, but not a reason for laws forbidding them from doing this. After all, a large percentage of movies and advertisements already use sexuality to sell their product.

If, as she states, she makes $900.00 in 5 hours then I would say that’s not “amateur” porn. Sure sounds pro to me.

Sex work of all sorts tends to be something that attracts people with few resoruces. It’s a Plan B occupation like Real Estate except all you need is a webcam these days and you don’t need a licensee. In wealthy countries, the workers tend to be immigrants as has been the case in Europe for a long time. In the US, the tend to be a broad cross-section of people whoa ren’t middle class, plus a few better off people who do it as a lark. They’re not representative of people with limited resources–you need a certain kind of acting skill and sex drive, but it certainly reflects the lack of options fo0r a lot of people.

I know absolutely NOTHING about online pornography, but I hear that the vast majority “amateur” porn is done by paid actors. They might not be producing DVDs or getting AVN awards (whatever an “AVN award” is because surely I know NOTHING about them), but they’re not amateurs. These girls have a talent scout/agent, FFS. True amateur porn is kinda hard to find. So I hear.

No. Redneck Heaven makes Hooters look like a kids’ cafeteria.

How many porn stars have moved into legit theater? My understanding is not many beyond Don Johnson, and those few have worked hard to remove all traces of their earlier work. The $900 she makes for a few hours work might seem like a good deal, but in the long run she will discover her porn exposure limits other career opportunities. It is sort of like a tattoo at 18. Sounds like a good idea at the time, but when you are 40 you wonder how you can get rid of the damn thing.

Well done. You clearly outline the problem of diminishing American opportunities intersecting sexism and classism.
My heart goes out to all young Americans , especially young women , who face these problems.

Did anyone mention forbidding anyone from doing anything? Must’ve missed it.

The movie makes that clear early on. (It was too depressing for me to watch more than a few minutes, so I know it was early on.)

It’s on Netflix, if you want to check it out. (Actually, it’s on Netflix whether you want to check it out or not.)

Once you take money to do something, no matter what is, you are no longer an amateur.

America has plenty of opportunities for women besides waitress and porn. If these chicks got internet to live cam, they got internet to go on Udemy or YouTube and learn a skillset like programming, digital editing, web development, etc that can be sold over the web and work from home.

If they choose the easy path that’s up to them, but, no one is forcing it upon them. If you want to find a sugar daddy, pop out a buncha kids and live pay check to pay check, that’s on you.

Most of Tracy Lords’ films have been suppressed because she was underage, but I don’t think she hid her past when she went into B movies. And Sasha Grey seems to be open about it. So I’m not sure that’s as true as it once was.

Several tiers now; at least:

  • Professionals under contract with major studios that make DVDs and “feature films” with scripts (but not only those). They’re the focus of the adult industry awards that show occasionally on late-night pay cable.
  • The constantly replenishing supply of still or recently teenagers that take ad-hoc jobs at one of the hundreds or thousands of web sites, catering to every niche. The producers are often the other half of the talent, so they’re the professionals, performing with amateurs.
  • Those that produce their own websites. I guess they’d be considered pros.
  • True amateurs that films themselves and upload it, without expecting to make money directly.

This documentary is about the young women in that second tier. They burn out in a few months, maybe a bit longer. A few will move up or down a tier.

Sasha made her transition by leveraging it in Entourage actually

The documentary, which is excellent, talks about how the ‘girls’ participating in this flavor of porn typically have a shelf life of 3-6 months before they’re retired. The one old hand in the show is 23 and has been doing it for 2 years, but she’s testifably the exception.

Our economy depends on unemployment to maintain a pool of job seekers large enough to keep wage inflation down, and we’ve been damn successful as a country in doing so. These young people take their future and bodies into hand when they have to make the choices between a right now and their future, and our society encourages it all.

As a young working class man I sacrificed my body performing heavy labor, which paid better than retail or customer service, and my employers were only too happy to have me. Thankfully my travails incentivized college and higher education, but I don’t have the societal shame in my life now that’s going to be put on the young women basically doing the same thing, but through their own avenue.

"Is this really the only two ends of the financial spectrum young women can expect? "

False dichotomy/false choice activism is false. Story at 11.

Implicit in the question and the article, is the recognition that this is objectifying, etc., and one can almost read the internal tug-of-war going on in the author’s head…is it liberating or is it oppressive? Which argument suits the end-game more and how do I make it? Do I just hint at both and avoid a conclusion or taking a position?

The fact is this: this is a microcosmic example of what Amurika’s descent into plutocracy is doing to young people REGARDLESS OF GENDER. Conveniently, it presents me with the perfect analogy to call it all a “literal fucking” and, whether people want to accept it or not, it’s giving young men pretty much an equal fucking at this point…bent over the proverbial fence and treated like the Koch brother’s favorite goat…and nobody wants to see us wagging our average dicks around under our average puffy beer bellies, no matter how fluffed, in amateur intertubez porn (not to mention pay us the equivalent of $360,000/year for it, no less), so at at least these ladies have that.
