Discussion for article #231668
Devout, blah blah. You took a dump on VA, Bob, and yours stinks as bad as everybody elseâs.
[Sen. Tim] Kaine noted that while both he and Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) broke prior tradition to exercise their power as governor to restore felonsâ voting rights, McDonnell blew them both out of the water by restoring voting rights to 8,000 people.
âIt seems fair to examine any request for mercy by exploring whether the petitioner has been merciful in similar circumstances,â Kaine wrote. âI am convinced that Governor McDonnell showed mercy to convicted felons not for political reasons or because he had anything personally to gain by doing so.â
Itâs really, really tempting to play the cynic and make a joke out of this, pointing out that McDonnell will indeed gain personally by an automatic restoration of voting rights once he has served his sentence, but the truth of the matter is that McDonnell started working on streamlining the restoration process almost from the moment he took office as governor:
But then there is another truth, too. I donât doubt that Maureen McDonnell was the driving force behind the extreme grifting during the McDonnellsâ time in the Governorâs Mansion, but that doesnât mean that the Governor himself should be let off the hook. I didnât see him turning down the Rolex watch, the free rounds of golf at Jonnie Williamsâs private club, the fancy vacations, or the use of Williamsâs Ferrari. He could have said no â but he didnât.
In the book of Genesis, Adam defended himself by pointing out that Eve gave him the apple to eat. God was having none of that â he punished both of them pretty severely.
