Discussion: The 7 Wildest Moments From Trump's Fact-Free Time Magazine Interview

Is it irresponsible for any journalist to publish an endless stream of lies? Even if it’s being fact checked in real time?

Just horrifying. There is no ability for rational critical thinking in evidence here.

The only thing we can hope for is that he will bring down, not only himself (that’s almost a given), but also the party that set the stage for and then aided and abetted his rise.

In this context it’s not so much broadcasting Trump’s lies as showcasing the endless stream of self-justification and reinforcement for his lies and fantasies. It’s showing the bizarre, pathological way his mind works, much as Captain Queeg’s outburst at the Caine trial didn’t persuade anyone of anything but his pettiness, incompetence, and instability. This isn’t like the normalization most of the press did from the beginning; it’s more like a belated but still-welcome effort at abnormalization IMHO.

Right, it’s letting his craziness speak for itself. It’s like showing a picture of a child who is starving to death. You don’t need a caption saying “This is horrible.”

But at the same time it explains his appeal to his fanbase, who “like the way Trump thinks”, because so many ill-informed people think this way, themselves.

Oh, he’s attuned. He watches TV, forms hazy, stereotypical impressions of things, and reacts to them in a simplistic, emotional way with an overarching sense that things are going wrong for the right sort of people. And that was enough.

There’s something wrong with him. Talk to people who deal with dementia. He’s disassociative. It wouldn’t surprise me a bit that his “ratings” and other trouble are making it worse.

One question needs to be asked:

Did you commit Treason?

Get him on record with this one.

Again, if this were the guy at the bus stop we were talking about there would be no debate. But tax cuts hinge on the outcome so Congresscritters and party hacks will applaud and humiliate themselves to appease his madness.

Pphucker has got several screws loose. Loose, hell, they’ve fallen out.

A silly, delusional, peevish, petulant little man. This has gone beyond mere embarrassment. We should be ashamed of ourselves.

“I’m president and you’re not.” Jeez, I know second-graders who are more mature.

Childlike reasoning is okay, but only if you’re actually a child. Does Donnie have people to tie his shoes and comb his “hair” for him?

That speaks to a fascinating thing about human consciousness–it is naturally drawn to its own level. So what to us sounds like almost comical incoherence to people on this wavelength sounds like perfect sense, is even inspiring.

It just hit me that we’re living in a sort of anti-King Lear where the children and friends of the old man force him to remain in power and indulge his whims, though still for selfish reasons. Makes me wonder what the ending will be.

Much as I hate (and feel deeply anxious about) having a president who thinks like this, an interview of this kind is useful.

All the crazy is on full display for everyone to see.

The other thing that I think is obvious is that Trump isn’t very clever. One of the reasons that guys like Dick Cheney were scary as hell was that they knew how government worked and used that knowledge as a tool for doing really evil things behind the scenes. Trump is incapable of that kind of thing. He’s a crazy guy with a sledge hammer.

Only 7? Seems low.

Careful there–That may be insulting to mature second graders everywhere.

Donald Trump has only a passing acquaintance with “the truth.” He’s the George Costanza President: “It’s not a lie, as long as you believe it.” Time has long been a rag, now they are wasting ink on The Boy Who Cried Wolf.
