Discussion: The 4 Stupidest Campaign Memes Of The 2014 Election

Discussion for article #228718

Great pic of the president. Where’s chammy?

Driving past local election signs that popped up like a plague of mushrooms over the weekend, I was struck by the the lifeless, rote mechanics of a process that has drifted very far from any Founders misty intentions. Oh sure I’ll vote in the Kentucky Senate race, a race where our broken media and highly functional smart phone political cash extraction system has presented some vague information about the candidates. The local races, however, with their meager if any web pages, post card mailers and complete lack of local media coverage, I will skip over as I mark my ballot until such time that candidates present information about themselves and their party affiliations. It has been amazing to learn that local race information doesn’t exist in a form available to the public. One of the once free over the air local TV stations might offer it to their $87 per year webpage subscribers…
So, I guess all that’s left is snark and an ‘I voted’ sticker.

Right here. Yes, it is a great picture but I haven’t seen a bad one. Went to see him on his visit her to Los Angeles last week. He is even more handsome in person. Best president ever.

Let me add you won’t see me around here much. I am tired of the gossip rag this place has become and the stupid click bait headlines. There are far more better places to have reasonable discussions with reasonable intelligent people. There are plenty of those people here but TPMZ has become intolerable

What does the headline have to do with the article? Those 4 memes are not unique to this cycle. They are pretty much standard fare in every election involving an incumbent. They must work or they wouldn’t be used over and over again, so from that point of view they aren’t stupid.

It’s not the memes that are stupid, it’s the voters who are influenced by them. And the Pat Roberts not-living-in-Kansas goes beyond anythuing I’ve seen. It’s one thing to spend most of your time in DC, but to claim somebody else’s residence–a donor, no less–as yours is way over the top. Does Roberts even pay rent on his “home” in Kansas?

Precisely the reason I am not coming back here anymore. TPM has become (aptly named by some) TPMZ

Love the commenters but the quality of stories here has become abysmal

Yes, it is pretty bad and the TPMZ dig is well-deserved. I’m thinking Josh put in the time, has been driving on empty for a decade or so, and finally sees the opportunity to cash in. Can’t blame him.

Sometimes looking for a better site to get my news. Where are you headed?

So, because your local candidates don’t have enough funds to broadcast their message directly to your brain, you’re going to ignore the representatives who make decisions directly affecting your life, and abdicate your vote to straight party-line voters? The GOP thanks you.

Political Wire. They use Disqus and the folks there are very politically savvy and very little gossip stories over there.

Why yes midnight rambler you are so right…direct brain feeds by the same families that have filled these local slots for, what, 50 years? Yes, it’s a cost vs. direct brain messaging thing. How smart you are. I feel so put in my place. It is my fault the system’s corrupt. You, in your filthy little dorm room, have figured it all out.

It’s not corruption alone that’s the problem with “the system” - to perpetuate it relies on people like you who are too lazy and/or apathetic to do their homework and so either vote for the incumbent or don’t vote at all. If that’s what you do, it is your fault the system’s corrupt. And all your condescending whining isn’t going to change anything.

This listicle could be #1 in a follow-up listicle: The 4 most insubstantial/disappointing pieces published by TPM in 2014.

What a clown you are…keep imagining who I am. Condescension seems an area with which you’re very familiar.
