We currently HAVE a statesman. Unfortunately he is being torpedoed constantly for every intelligent and well-thought-out initiative he has. Hillary will have the same challenges, but at least they won’t say she is a Kenyan Muslim; although it won’t matter to the tea baggers; any excuse for hatred is good enough.
I know the culture (Moroccan-Algerian) and this kind of attitude exists there. Taking justice into one’s own hands, such as a street mob ganging up on a common thief and beating him to death — or even killing one’s own children if they cause shame to the family. For example, a father might say the same thing about a child who turned out to be gay. In his eyes, it would be his duty to do it, or he himself would be shamed. Not that this happens much in reality, thank god. Though surely it would be more justified in the present case where the son is a mass murderer!

There would be even less point in attacking Cambodia or Peru. France is at least a former colonial power in the region that is involved militarily in the present conflict (and was, even before the attack).
As for the particular venues for the attacks, these are unfortunately “targets of opportunity,” chosen because the attackers knew them and frequented them in the past.
