Had she been white, this would not have happened.

This is bananas. I get that she was on supervised release, but five years for a crime w/o intent? Felons should be allowed to vote anyway (I feel like there’s a constitutional argument to be made to end that practice) but this sentence is draconian.

Wait, she’s African-American?!?

WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED IT!?!?!?1!!!

Ouch, that’s nuts. If she wore a MAGA hat she probably would have gotten off with a slap.

If she had said she voted for Trump, that would have been enough.

Is she a Clarence Thomas Republican

Lucky Deplorable Donnie Dotard didn’t order her lynched from an oak tree outside the courthouse…

Des Texas have sentencing guidelines on this, or what it just the judge “making an example?” The right have failed over and over to find any evidence to support the ridiculous delusion that they are actually the majority, and Democratic votes are a mass of frauds and illegals. So it’s not surprising when they find one, isolated example of voter fraud - with extenuating circumstances, no less - they pour all that fear and paranoia into it.

ah, but she might have been one of his votes, already.

A stark juxtaposition to have this article on the same page as the one about Texan politician and crook, Steve Stockman….with his anonymous benefactors and team of expensive lawyers. Good ole boys, and all that.

Don Blankenship only got 1 year for killing 29 miners. Now he will be the Republican nominee for the Senate from West Virginia. If she wanted those kinds of breaks she should have had the good sense to be born white.

If voting illegally unintentionally and just once is worth five years -in a just world -imagine what suppressing the voting rights of millions should be worth.

Was the sentence just for voting or for violating the conditions of her supervision?

Honestly, 5 years makes no sense even as a deterrent. No one would risk even 5 month of jail time just to vote.

Wondering why in the hell she waved her right to a jury trial.

I’d expect civilian jurors to say “fuck this” over a judge saying “I will enforce the law and woe is you”.

Jury trial? She lives in Texas. Hello.

Depends on who’s votes you are trying to surpress.

Good question.

The Judge here is a Republican appointed by Rick Perry.

I’ve been unfortunate enough to know several Latino Republicans from Texas (no judges but lawyers) and I have to say I found them to be the self-loathing over the top uber right wing types that behave as if they are compensating for their brown skin every day.

Don’t know this judge but if the shoe fits…
