Secretary of State David Whitley apologized to the best of his abilities. “It’s not my fault,” he said, and pledged to do better.
You’re not in Kansas, David. Texas has just enough purple tinge these days, shit like this won’t fly.
a signal his job could be in jeopardy.
So does Texas want a Secretary of State that clumsily attempts voter suppression or does Texas want a secretary who’s better at hiding it?
Forget it, Jake, it’s Texas.
Yeah, like whaaaaaaa?
Democrats have sharply criticized Whitley but have so far not said they will try to block his nomination.
Oh, it’s Texas.
They want a Secretary of State that gets results, and by that they mean dis-franchising brown people .
What Whitley tried to pull here is the equivalent of suggesting George Washington was an illegitimate president because he wasn’t born in America. Glad he’s getting some heat for it.
Apologizing at this point – especially in such a non-apology way – doesn’t really help him, because it makes clear what a dishonest, ambitious grafter he is. Like so many republicans, he punches down and kisses up.
“I recognize this caused some confusion about our intentions, . . ."
No. There is no confusion at all about your intentions.
Texas wants a Secretary of State who does it right: Texas Reoublicans want a Secretary of State who does it wrong.
Dude, your intention is clear. I could see it here in Missouri!
Well then Texas and Texas Republicans should of nominated someone whose last name started with ‘K’, as in Kobach and Kemp to two shinning stars of voter suppression.
To paraphrase, the David is what the David is.
Make no mistake: this guy is a toady for the Texas Secretary of State who himself is serving his term under indictment.
Here’s the written version of a story I heard on public radio earlier today, with a lot of detail about what Travis County (Austin) is having to do to vet the list. I get the feeling they are teeing up a bunch of data for lawsuits, to be honest. Bruce Elfant, head of the Voter Registration offices, is one of the good guys.
They have been finding lots of names of voters who registered at naturalization ceremonies in Austin and San Antonio. Of course, people move to Austin from all over at a high rate, that’s the other lead story on the website.
The chair of the Senate Nominations Committee yanked the Whitley’s confirmation hearing off the schedule - he didn’t even wait to be confirmed to pull this shit show. (I was startled to see the Chair’s name; I’ve actually seen her as a patient.)
The Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton, is under indictment for securities fraud. And got re-elected, because too many folks don’t pay any damn attention. And it’s not voter fraud, so who cares?
The former Secretary of State resigned in December after two years on the job, and Abbott named this Whitley guy as his replacement. (In Texas, we elect the Governor, Lt. governor, and AG, but not the Secretary of State.)
The confirmation was delayed because he needs a chunk of Democrats to vote to confirm. Had the vote taken place, he would not have been confirmed. A week ago he was anything but apologetic. The only reason he’s apologizing now is to save his nomination. Hopefully, Democrats will see the apology for the bullshit that it is and not confirm.
Bingo
“I recognize this caused some confusion about our intentions, which were at all times aimed at maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the voter rolls,” Whitley wrote.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
You lie.
Now did not ACLU and a bunch of ‘other’ organizations already file suit? THAT could be why he did not ‘apologize’ or accept blame, it MIGHT make the state of Texas MORE liable.
BUT he has made Texas LIABLE for payment of pain and suffering to the people on that list.
They don’t say in this article, did they ever say how many people WERE correctly on the list?
Oh this is such a mess. A disgusting mess.
