Discussion: Texas Governor Signs Bill Allowing Handguns On College Campuses

Discussion for article #237444

The bill allows private universities to opt out of campus carry and allows university presidents to declare ā€œgun freeā€ zones on their campuses, according to KXAN. All colleges will be able to set their own rules on how firearms can be carried and where.

In other words, it is pointless legislation, passed to make the ammosexuals feel good about themselves.

ā€œā€˜We expect the Constitution of the United States of America to be our guiding doctrine,ā€™ā€

Teatroll Rosetta Stone: ā€œLook…even if I’m super lucky, I’m only going to face one, maybe two, situations in my lifetime when I might have reason to shoot people, brown people in particular, and can get away with it. It would be a shame for me to find myself in that situation unarmed.ā€

A professor opens up to the class a discussion of some topic lending itself to controversy. Strongly held and stated positions arise and, ahem, lively, contentious debate ensues. One of the more vociferous voices in the room is known to pack a loaded weapon and he’s getting noticeably agitated. Yeah, that’ll assure everyone’s candor in an educational setting.

ā€œThere is nothing more important in democracy than the voice of the people stepping up and saying ā€˜We expect the Constitution of the United States of America to be our guiding doctrine,ā€™ā€ he said.

Yes, because if there’s one amendment in the Constitution that’s crystal clear in it’s reading and intent, it’s the 2nd. Obviously it calls for the unmitigated right for private individuals to own and carry firearms anywhere they’d like. Of course that’s only in the special, real Constitution that is given to right-wing ā€œReal Americansā€, so don’t bother looking in your copy.

The 2nd Amendment was passed because many framers were concerned that the federal government would disarm the state militias and replace them with a standing army. None of the framers intended for the 2nd Amendment to give private citizens the right to carry non-hunting weapons in public. The absolute right to open or conceal carry firearms in public cannot be found in the 2nd Amendment.

Notice the word ā€˜private’. What does this mean for public universities?

On the same day the Dallas PD looks to ramp up security at police stations and city hall, Gov. Abbott signs an open carry bill.

I love how the police want to secure their places of work, but have said nothing about churches, malls, parks, etc.

Private universities may total ban. Public universities, the President is allowed to restrict.

Actually…I just looked in the original article. It says ā€œAbbott said he would also sign legislation later in the day that requires the state’s public universities and colleges to allow handguns on campus buildings and in dorms.ā€

so…if I read this correctly. It is not innocuous and meaningless, but (along with the other legislation) has the potential for real consequences.

I’m thinking of starting a petition to rename Texas. I’m thinking of calling it Dumb Rubes. Thoughts?

Great idea, I say. What better way to understand anatomy than with fresh, working wounds. Yeah!

You do realize that the state capitol is in Austin…the stupid is fully integrated into the city.

I live and teach at a public university in the state of Texas. Greg Abbott is a pandering opportunistic scumbag, on this as in so many other issues.
