Discussion: Texas GOP Rep. Ted Poe Announces He Will Retire In 2018

27 GOOPS, more than I thought. Even better. Not getting excited yet because who knows who’ll run in their place, but it goes against the “so much winning” nonsense orange spewed.

@geofu54 I should add that everything I’ve ever heard is that being in the House is tough on the body and spirit and purse. Fundraising begins about six months into the term, and it eventually becomes demoralizing, more so, I suspect, when one’s a member of the opposition party.

That is an affront to democracy.
They pulled the same shit here in Florida in 2010
We finally got a fair districts amendment on the ballot which won handily
It then took 4years and 20 million of our tax dollars to get what the people voted for enacted.
Motherfuckers fought it tooth and nail , but the courts prevailed and used the League of Women voters plan after the various Republican “plans” were thrown out by the courts.
They can’t win a fair fight so they cheat

Look at the maps as they progress in time. I live here (20th) and I know it is a mess, but to look at it that way really is informative as to motive.

And closer to home -

I hear you.

But please hear this: it’s much easier to win an open seat than it is to unseat an incumbent. We have to nominate candidates who represent the district-as-it-is, and we have to fight hard in the campaign. The thing we won’t have to do is to fight the pork barrel battle. You know, “Well, I don’t agree with ole Ted ‘bout everythin’, but damn he’s brought money into the district! I’m gonna vote for 'im agin.”

This is why I don’t put much stock in generic congressional ballot polls: the pervasive attitude of “All those congresscritters are lousy good-for-nothings–except mine.”

Running scared

Yeah, I just looked at the NC map. The 12th District from 2013- 17 was one for the ages. What was the purpose there? Were the a$$e$ packing or cracking D votes?

When I hear that a Texan was a ‘defender of religious freedom’, I can only imagine how those words are being twisted.

Let’s stay on target squad - it’s about the EPA, the supreme court, tax loopholes and future disaster preparadeness in the face of global warming - if you know people who are apathetic or reluctant in '18 - don’t make it anti 45* - make it about their lives. Hold the media accountable and call them out on false equivalencies.

there’s going to be a lot of industrial waste dumping between now and the next president, plus the time it takes to make new laws and enforce them. May the Koch brothers be forced to live downwind of their factories

Packing all of “those people” into a single district.

Is that true? Really? It’s just hard for me to imagine that any Republican politician - from Texas, no less! - would actually be an advocate for religious freedom.

Or are you just using the Republican definition of “religious freedom,” which means that Christians don’t have to obey the law?

Personally, I don’t think that Christians - or any other religious people - getting more rights than us atheists is actually “religious freedom.” And that’s normally what Republicans mean when they use that phrase.

But I’m not familiar with Rep. Poe, so maybe he’s the exception?

Well, he did everything he could to reduce the availability, cut back drastically on PSA about enrollment, and tried to convince people it was dead and buried — but they are still enrolling in big numbers.

I fervently hope and believe that Current Occupant will not succeed.

In most cases, they’re retiring specifically because they can’t withstand a wave election and they damn well know it. Just because a seat has been long held by an R doesn’t mean it’s an R district. Most people dislike Congress, but are fond of their congressperson. Just because a district has routinely voted for an incumbent R doesn’t mean it won’t readily flip to D. That’s exactly what happened here, and now we have one of the most liberal members of Congress and one who routinely wins with 60+‰ of the vote.
