As someone who has never been around guns, never picked up one, or even looked at it closely, I really do not understand how they work. I do know they have a “safety” which isupposed to be engaged to prevent discharge until one is ready to fire. I don’t understand the bullet in the chamber vs. not in the chamber. So I have no idea how this could have happened. Can someone explain to me the mechanics involved, in simple terms? Serious here.

I’m fairly certain the guy had a 1911-style .45 auto, a classic sort of pistol first developed for the military by John Browning. Some people carry them “cocked and locked,” which means the hammer cocked and the safety on, because it’s a single-action gun where the trigger can’t cock the hammer, that has to be done by the gun’s mechanism after it fires. “Cocked and locked” means you can take it from the holster, release the safety, and fire immediately. It’s also a very accident-prone way to carry it. For some reason, I’m guessing, this guy wanted to move the gun or something and managed to release the safety and press the trigger, shooting himself in the leg.
