Discussion: Temperatures Rise On Impeachment As Congress Heads Back Into Session

If you asked Democrats to bake a cake they’d request 6 months to review which oven to buy before even getting started.

Gee, POLITICO is in full rethug mode today.
“Dems hope Pelosi’s resistance to impeachment will crack in June”
Seriously? Know your REAL enemies!

Trump is, himself, working mightily to help Democrats toward Impeachment…certainly toward an Impeachment Inquiry.

In fact, he’s the best person on our team…

There will be no impeachment or even many more hearings. It will be too close to the election to risk losing the votes of the economically anxious.

(Yes, that was snark.)

“But Democrats eager to launch impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump fear they’re running out of time to persuade Pelosi to change course before presidential politics consumes Washington.”

If these Dems really only care about “doing the right thing” and despise political calculus, why do they fear about the competition with presidential election? Don’t ya think it’s a bit hypocritical?

There are lots of things Trump is stonewalling…any one of which can cause a change in calculus…

We have a choice here.

We can charge directly into impeachment. That would feel good. But the result would be the same as the Charge of the Light Brigade or Custer’s Last Stand.

Or we can take our time and prepare. 75 years ago was D-Day. It took years of planning and preparation, and it still was a close run thing.

I think that Nancy Pelosi is more in the Eisenhower model than that of Lord Cardigan or General Custer!

This is the story to watch:

There could be some interesting news in the next few days.

If defiance of a court order isn’t impeachable, what is?

Seriously! Pelosi, DO NOT EVER pull a McConnell and postpone what the constitution requires of you because of an impending election!!! Impeachment is YOUR job, not ours. And trust me on this. You definitely have our permission! Just do it!!!

I think they less fear the timing, if impeachment proceedings actually happen than if once the presidential election get underway that impeachment won’t move forward.

I wish more people knew what the word “hypocritical” means. There is more to hypocrisy than mere inconsistency.

From the article:

This stymies their plan to put the Mueller report on television in an easily understandable format to sway public opinion on impeachment.

Jeez, Dems, hire a writer already. Don’t rely on witnesses to do your job. Hire Aaron Sorkin for six months. Don’t keep moving the goal posts further and further away from “starting now”.

Remember when centrists lectured the rest of us about how “perfect is the enemy of good”?

I guess that doesn’t apply if you don’t really want to do something.

Empty words without any real consideration of what’s going on in this country.

The anti-impeachment crowd relies a lot on metaphors and scaring people. It does its level best to avoid historical comparisons and serious political analysis.

The downside from an impeachment, even an impeachment stopped by McConnell, is much, much less than the downside from refusing to impeach. There are a lot of people sick and bleeping tired of Democrats who make an art of refusing to ever do anything meaningful.

The party has literally been following a do-as-little-as-possible strategy for decades. And, compared to its historical support levels, it’s much weaker than its been since the 1920s. Maybe these two facts are not only correlated, but causal? A serious look at approval ratings shows that strong opposition to Republican policies is the best way to win elections, while tepid opposition is the best way to lose. The biggest win in this century was Obama’s 2008 “Change” campaign. And yet the professional pundits tell us the country doesn’t really want change. Why, then, did Trump win over the ultimate status quo candidate?

Wonder if anything will get started before their next VACATION. I assume it’s early July. Come on people.
If you think the stonewalling is over the top now, just wait till impeachment proceedings. It could take till after the election for it to happen.
I repeat, come on.

This is the absolute red line, the last remaining guardrail in the rule of law, and the press, including TPM, seem to have so far overlooked the story. It is also not a problem just for Democrats, and Republicans must know this.

In all of this political maneuvering and calculations, I wonder how they’re weighing the left’s electoral apathy? Right now, it’s fine. The electorate isn’t even paying attention, but the mandate given to Democrats when we took the house back last year, was to impeach the mother %^&*er. If they decide ultimately not to follow through, I worry that it’s going to depress turnout.

Clinton was impeached for lying about having sex. Really? A very very stupid move on his part, but impeachable?
If anyone thinks that there is not enough on Trump to start the process, they haven’t been paying attention.

And then there’s the recipe. And who gets to do the baking, so that no one individual gets his/her feelings hurt.

Good observation. It very well might, and probably will.

All the more reason…

It was noted yesterday that impeachment by the House, even if the Senate does not convict, is a perfectly fine result for the country. That situation puts every single Republican on the record as supporting a President who has been found to have violated the law, violated his oath of office, and actively worked with an enemy state to subvert the legitimacy of this nation’s democratic process. Get that on the record. Force the Republicans to defend themselves as being the enablers to a criminal. Force the voters to make a choice as to what country they would rather live in. Impeach the motherfucker!
