Discussion for article #230224
[“Vater, who had prior convictions including assault and breaking and entering, was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.”]
Sounds like the NRA’s, the Righties’ and the Cons’ man of the year.
If only the good guy, the 13 year old, had been armed guess he would have been OK, huh Wingnuttery and NRA?
What about my rights? Apparently my right to live no longer extends to the walls of my hotel room
NRA ditto head of the year
Second amendment rights… That kid’s right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness has been robbed from him, and his family. Who will speak for them.
A five minute, universal background check and that kid would probably still be alive.
I hope this happens to Wayne LaPierre. Because this is what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they spoke of a well-armed militia.
Edit: Oh, I actually just read my copy of the United States Constitution. Turns out they actually said “well regulated militia”, not “well-armed”. I’m surprised nobody noticed that before.
Nothing will be done about guns until they are turned on the rich. When that happens, every Republican in Congress will vote to confiscate guns.
Like when conservative demigod Ronald Reagan banned open carry in California when he was Governor because the Black Panthers started carrying. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulford_Act
“Don’t forget your gun when checking into a hotel! Then if the room service isn’t satisfactory, you can shoot an innocent bystander!”
NRA Handbook
Precisely.
This is too sad for words. Another young life cut short before it even got started. More American Exceptionalism brought to you by the NRA and the gun manufacturers of American in their pursuit of filthy lucre. If this were an isolated incident it would be one thing, but this has become part and parcel of life in America. Note the following other stories on the web site at WGHP in the link:
- NC caregiver charged after child shoots himself in leg
- NC teen shot, killed while trying to buy iPhone off Craigslist
- Greensboro police investigate shootings at home, hotel
- Additional arrests made in fatal Winston-Salem nightclub shooting
- NC teenager killed in shooting outside of party
- Man found shot to death inside Winston-Salem home identified
- NC family prepares to say goodbye to young mother shot to death
- 1 shot, killed in Charlotte home invasion
And that’s just a random day on a regional news site in North Carolina.
Was this guy charged because he was a convicted felon? So many times we see stories of someone accidently shot, and the police do not charge the shooter.
Every day, in every part of the country this happens. But, the SCOTUS disallows states and cities, towns etc. to set gun control laws to combat this crap. No one should have the right to carry guns unless they are hunting,(rifles, shot guns), are law enforcement, or in their own homes or place of business. Your second amendment doesn’t trump my rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Screw the NRA and the gun lovers.
Multiply this horrible event by 50,000 and you’ll see what will happen if the ammosexual gunhumpers at the NRA get their wish of every American packing a loaded gun at all times.
Parking lots, restaurants, movie theaters, sporting events, schools, shopping mall restrooms, it will happen everywhere these incompetent “I was just cleaning it…” gun fetishists happen to be.
Extremely good point, and well taken. If only by everyone.
Oddly enough, there’s still a wide no-carry zone around the U.S. Supreme Court, and virtually every state legislature in the hands of the GOP gun-fetishists bans the carrying of weapons inside the building. I wonder why.
Reagan outlawed open carry in California because he did not like The Black Panthers carrying guns. Can you picture young black men walking into a Chilis in Houston loaded for bear…those nice white Christian folks that scream “Second Amendment” would sh&t themselves
Since this is getting to be a known risk, how about we require that hotels put a layer of kevlar in all their walls. Or else institute no-gun sections, the same way that they have smoking and no-smoking rooms.
It’s the Gilded Age all over again. If you have enough money to influence politicians you can literally kill ordinary people in the course of doing business and not be punished or even curtailed in any way.
Conservatives will argue that “well-regulated” at the time of the framing only meant well functioning, or “in proper working order” and not in “regulated” in the sense that government should have heavy handed oversight. So watch out for that. You can turn that back on them and ask how a militia is “in proper working order” when deranged psychopaths can freely obtain a firearm and wipe out a classroom full of children.
