I heard a similar story in my Congressional District. Older woman who had just moved here in 2016, went to meet Matt Gaetz. She caught him just as he was getting off his bus for a town hall, and went up to him, all smiles and shook his hand “I voted for you”. Gaetz of course did the typical “Well, thank you for that” line, but before he could finish she rushed up into his face, lost the smile and growled “And I’ll never do it again!”. Freaked him out so bad, he jumped back like 3 feet.

Signs have popped up in my conservative neighborhood, too. My next door neighbor put one up over the weekend. I need to get mine up soon, too.

Money is nice, but it’s the polls that matter. How’s he polling in Texas?

A Democrat won in Alabama, that’s one point. Also, Cruz only won 600,000 votes when he ran for the Senate eight years ago. But he’s comparing O’Rourke to Sanders right now and might even link him to Nancy Pelosi out of desperation. Who knows.

I haven’t seen any polls. I don’t know how he’s polling. I just know how unpopular Ted Cruz is.

Does Beto speak Spanish?

Spot on comparisons between styles of both men. Beto’s appealing to our better angels, and Cruz, well, he’s being Cruz.

“Beto O’Rourke does this Pope Francis interpretation, turning the other cheek,” said Cal Jillson, a political analyst at Southern Methodist University. “He’s tapping into a Democratic sense that Donald Trump and his trash-mouth politics and the hard-ball played by Republicans allows Democrats to feel as if they harken for bipartisanship, dialogue, reason and common sense.”

Consciously nor not, the Democratic strategy seems tailor made to exploit Cruz’s singular weakness in the 2016 Republican presidential primaries. His runner-up finish to Trump won him praise for strategy, organization, energy and fundraising - but not likeability.

“You have a Republican incumbent senator who isn’t warm and fuzzy enough to have universal support, and you have a strong, young, vibrant Democratic challenger over-performing expectations his first year on the campaign trail,”

Yeah we couldn’t have asked for a better candidate to run against Cruz. Beto is good looking, he’s charismatic and he’s working his ass off for this - he has been going around to just about every little town in Texas and there are a bunch of them.

I think there is good reason to be cautious but I also think this probably represents the best opportunity in a decade.

He’s going to have to work hard and organize grass roots groups to run voter registration drives and GOTV operations on election day.

Any chance his Democratic opponent Sema Hernandez, will help in the Latino communities and border counties? It’s hard to imagine unseated Cruz without a united front from Texas Democrats.
